doing a defrag and running scan disk. What do you scrub the hard drive with? Just soap/water? Or do I use something else?

That should be fine. Although, you may need to use a little muriatic acid and steel wool on the nasty spots.

If you want to save a little money, just use some lemon juice instead of the acid. Steel wool is a most though.

You should use the acid (or lemon juice - thanks for the tip icantbejon!) with it running. But when you rinse it off you'll have to disconnect it.

One word of warning. Make sure you touch the bare metal frame to discharge any static electricity before removing it or you may ruin the hard drive.
