I had this one sitting around for about 6 months. Good looking cigar. Very firm with a dark oily wrapper. The cap popped off a bit which didn't pose a problem.

First third - Great initial draw with lots of chocolate notes. Very smooth with mild peppery spice which lingers on the tongue...some mild sweetness. The spice drops off a bit and the smoke turns incredibly smooth and sweet...packed with deep tobacco flavors.

Second third - Started have a burn problem which requires a fixup. Still staying very smooth with cocoa flavors. Abundant amounts of smoke. The peppery spice continues to increase.

Last third - Wow. Very powerful. I'm starting to get noticeably dizzy at this point. Strong lingering flavors on the tongue. The smoke is staying very smooth...sweet...and very strong.

Overall an impressive smoke. Quite complex with a very smooth profile. Sure to please if you are looking for something to really kick your butt!

Great stick....I like the whole line...They do have a "kick".....We had some nice weather in early December....in the 60's....so I decided to put up some xmas decorations and fire up a "Gran Consul", 5 x 60 I think....Anyway, I'm up on the extension ladder hanging a wreath when the "nic buzz" hit....I told my son to get outta the way....dropped the stogie and waited for my head to clear....luckily the only tragedy was a semi-wasted stick..Note to self: Only smoke at "ground level" :D

haha you have to be careful with these! I have a couple of belicosos (I think)...they are enormous and I'm seriously intimidated :)

Great cigar. The joya line seems to have a unique taste that I like. Definitely need to smoke this one slowly and relax.

Great review on an awesome stick. I have a box of these and they are my go to smoke. Atlantic Cigar has them for $51.95 a box which is great.

If you like these, try the Omar Ortez Original. Similar flavor profile IMO. :ss

One of my favorites. A deliciously complex and powerful cigar, with a reasonable price as a bonus. Thanks for the review.

Nice review! This is my personal favorite. I especially like the Gran Consul size. I was really bummed recently because I had been getting these from serious cigars at $4.05 a stick, but the price shot up to $7.25/stick. But, as darkninja pointed out above, I also came across these at Atlantic Cigar and I have an order in for a box of 20 Gran Consul's @ $66.00. With shipping it comes to like $3.57/stick. Hard to beat that IMO!

Heck yeah Atlantic has amazing prices on JdN. I picked up a box of lanceros about a month ago for $60 shipped...can't beat that. Unfortunately they came in sopping wet and basically unsmokable at this point...giving them a few months to dry.

They were overhumidified? mine were fine OOTB. Maybe dry box them for a few days at least.

So has anybody tried the Gran Reserva variation and compared it to the original Antano's?

Yea they are still a bit too humid. Dry boxing is a great idea if I can't hold off for a few more months. The box bumped my RH by 4% when I first put it in.

They're not good fresh, but give them a year and they're pretty damned tasty.

Thanks for the nice review and photo's Luke. The Consul is my favorite and a great tasting cigar. Before the SCHIP issue, TNT had these going for $63 (but don't tell Ratters that;)).
