Today starts the NBA playoffs and there are a lot of interesting matchups:

Eastern Conference
#1 Cleveland Cavaliers vs. #8 Detroit Pistons
#2 Orlando Magic vs. #7 Chicago Bulls
#3 Boston Celtics vs. #6 Philadelphia 76ers
#4 Atlanta Hawks vs. #5 Miami Heat

Western Conference
#1 Los Angeles Lakers vs. #8 Utah Jazz
#2 Denver Nuggets vs. #7 New Orleans Hornets
#3 San Antonio vs #6 Dallas Mavericks
#4 Portland Trail Blazers vs. #5 Houston Rockets

The East is full of upsets but at the end of the day who can stop Cleveland?(more importantly LeBron). LA is going to cruise to the finals IMO. Should be an interesting playoffs at the least.

It's a long-shot, but I'm hoping for my Trailblazers to make a run deep into the playoffs. Being in the same bracket as the Lakers will make it even harder to get to the Finals. But first, bring on the Rockets!

Man how I would love for them to make the NBA finals... would definitely be a highlight for me. Been a nuggets fan for several decades now and we can't seem to make a decent run for a title...

One of only 7 teams I think never to win a championship in the NBA... :( When teams like Boston have 17 it definitely makes ya think its time for one here in Denver! :D

i dont like that statement.

Mo Williams is the reason why Lebron shines. True, Cleveland could not win the title without LBJ... They could also not win it without Mo.... or maybe even Delonte West.

Regardless. the Cavs will win it, they want it more than the Lakers. This will be Clevelands first title victory since 1948 when the browns won (what would be) the super bowl. Besides, chemistry is a known word in Cleveland....

No doubt about that, I have seen that man play twice and he is absolutely one of the sickest athletes I have ever watched. Almost hit his chin on the rim when he went for a break-away dunk in LA last year. :jd

I dunno about that one. Lakers are so deep especially with Bynum back in the lineup. Kobe realizes this is his best chance to get another ring. Lakers in 6. Lebron vs Kobe is going to be a great finals. In the end I don't think Cleveland will have an answer for the Lakers depth.

I don't care who is around Lebron though he is getting better and better every year. He is amazing and is going to get even better.

Yeah they did... and they have looked terrible all series really. The nuggets had one bad game against NO where nothing was going right, and they still almost won that game. The combined margin of victory for the 3 nuggets wins is 102 points vs the Hornets 1 win is 2 points. I just hope we can keep playing well and surprise a few people when we beat the Lakers. :D

Did you see the shot he took? I absolutely agree with him getting suspended... you can't punch people and you can't throw elbows, kicks, or anything else to intentionally harm another player...

I agree with ya though... with Howard and Lee our, Philly better win game 6 and take it to 7.

Yeah... but I always say if you have to leave it to the refs to win a game, then that was the first mistake. The nuggets LOVE to leave games in the refs hands in the many many years I have been a nuggets fan... There are always a ton of bad calls in the NBA... dunno if its the nature of being a ref in the league or what...

It does suck to get a win that way though...

GreekGodX
05-10-2009, 08:21 AM
It does suck having a game end in that fashion. But I look at Dirk missing that fade away before that play, he makes that shot and the foul makes no difference. Antoine Wright should have fouled Carmelo way before he was at the 3 point line too. I just don't think that missed call really impacted the game that much. Considering also Dallas had a chance at the end of the game to win. The NBA admitted they made a mistake and it happens. We will definitely see this series go to at least a game 5.

Can you saw SWEEP? Get the brooms out. The only question now, is do the Nuggets have enough to stop the Lakers?

God let's hope so... I seriously hate the Lakers and they have MORE than enough banners hanging from the rafters... time to let someone else have some. I mean hell I would be happy just playing in the NBA finals (something the nuggets have never done). And only the Clippers have gone longer in the NBA without making it to the finals... not the kind of company I wanna keep so its time to break that drought.

I was hoping to play Houston over the Lakers, but without Yao that isn't gonna happen... so bring on the Lakers and let's get this dance going. The nuggets have always had mismatch problems with the lakers, but with the way they are playing right now, it may not matter. The lakers just don't seem to have enough fight... so the question is can the Nuggets outscore the Lakers for 4 games? I'm a believer...(but I'm also a Delusional nuggets fan...:D)

I love the small feud that is going on between Kenyon Martin and Mark Cuban right now.. Apparently Kenyon Martin's mother yelled out something to the tune of the Nuggets are "thugs". Cuban responded by saying "that includes your son". Well of course Martin's mother claims Cuban said something else and the saga continues. Now Martin vows to settle the feud with Cuban face-to-face. Very classy.

I'm cheering for the nuggets big time because I'm a huge Chauncey Billups fan, but Carmelo has got to get his head examined taking a shot at Wright like he did last night. When I saw the replay, I thought there was a good chance he would get suspended for the next game because he took an obvious shot at his head. I haven't heard anyone make a big deal out of it so maybe it will slip under the league's radar, but you are 1 win from the conference finals! Don't be an idiot!

Honestly, I grew up loving Boston and their "legacy". Unfortunately, it seems like The Big 3 who play for the Celtics forget that they all played for horrible, horrible teams for the past 10+ years and feel because they won a championship they can talk trash to everyone they play against. Seeing KG on the sideline (in a suit, not even playing) cursing and constantly talking smack to the other team is an embarrassment, to himself mainly.

I wouldn't discount the Nuggets just yet. Yes they may have a bad record against the Lakers in recent years and in the playoffs... but none of that matters. Its all about the next 4-7 games and nothing else matters. Proof of that is the Magic/Celtics game 7 yesterday... the Celtics were 17-3 while playing game 7s at home... and they had never lost a playoff series when they were up 3-2 until yesterday... they were 32-0...

I'm sticking with my Nuggets in 6! :D Cuz I haven't had this much fun as a Nuggets fan since I was 14...

So are we all in agreement Cavs crush the Magic in 4 games? Lebron is simply unstoppable at this point. Magic won the season series but that doesn't matter much in the playoffs...

Lakers/Nuggets will be a slugfest and go to 7 games no doubt. I just don't think Nuggets can handle the depth of the Lakers. It will be too much and who is going to guard Kobe??

Well I definitely think the Cavs will win the series... but I think Orlando has the best chance of any team in the East to beat them. It all depends on the Magic and their perimeter shooting. Can they keep the Cavs D busy all night running around? Or are they gonna brick most of their shots and make it easy for the Cavs to overwhelm them on D?

For the Nuggets/Lakers... gonna be a tough series for the Nuggets no doubt. But I like the new Nuggets defensive mindset. I think it creates problems for teams by getting in their faces... The Lakers don't like people in their face, so that could be a big issue...as for guarding Kobe, I don't think the Nuggets will worry about him much... they didn't worry about Nowitzki much...and someone as good as Kobe or Nowitzki is gonna get their points no matter what you do. So play good 1-on-1 and let them have their points, but shut the rest of the team down.

Can't wait for game 1 tonight! Hope the Nuggets go into LA and take game 1 to send a message!:tu:D

Kobe is in a different leauge compared to Dirk. It will be interesting who guards him on he perimeter. Denver was good against dirk because hey have frontcourt depth. I just don't see who will guard him effectively. When Kobe can drive the lane they are just too good. Houston was effective at guarding Kobe because they could force him into bad shots. Denver will have a much harder time doing that. Also LA's bigs are much better then Dallas'. No doubt it will be a great series.

I wish you had made the bet as making a statement that Cleveland is gonna crush the Magic in 4 games either says you are a big Cavs fan or missed the Magic / Celtic series.

I could care less about the 5er, but would have enjoyed talking trash each time the magic beat the Cavs.

Someone besides Lebron and Mo Williams better start scoring or King James is gonna be cramping up every night running the court like that.

I like the Magic's chances considering the 3 point attack from the outside and Howard in the paint if he can stay out of foul trouble.

I wish they would play all the games in Cleveland as the Magic play best on the road and with their backs against the wall.

Then again, I have watched the Magic break our hearts year after year.

I really believe Orlando is one player away from a championship.

The only reason Lebron cramped up is because the week layoff. Magic live and die with the 3-ball. Meaning they will go on great runs (last night) or they will have droughts. What they need is a player that can consistently get to the basket and can finish, or another quality big man to help dwight. Until then I don't see the Magic getting to the finals. Had the Celtics had KG it would have been C's Cavs series.

Actually I would say if there was time for one last shot to win the game I wouldn't pick Kobe or Lebron... I would pick Melo. He is the best last second shooter in the NBA and has hit more game winning buckets than either of the two previous MVPs. They were discussing that on ESPN a few weeks back. :D

I am looking forward to the game tonight as well. I just hope the Nuggets come out with a huge hunger to win and not with the "poor me" attitude...Cuz they beat themselves in game 1... there is no reason that game should have even been that close in the last 2 minutes...

Actually I just looked up the stats for this season on www.82games.com and Lebron is actually the most clutch shooter (most game winning shots) in the regular season followed by Vince Carter, Ray Allen, Kobe. Carmelo lead the list in 2006. Kobe is tied with Lebron for most clutch in the playoffs. Another stat to look at is Kobe has the most missed game winning opportunities.

well, if wishes were horses, beggars would ride and if Oppenheimer didn't invent the atomic bomb, we'd all be talking German.

In the meantime, KG is out, so are the Celtics, Jameer Nelson is on the bench, Billy Donovan is wishing he was coaching the Magic instead of coaching the Gators, and 3 pointers will be raining down tomorrow night and Lebron James will score another 50 and the series, in my opinion, will be hard fought and probably go 6 or 7 games.

Throughout the Lakers playoff run this year he has not made many good coaching moves. Letting Derek Fisher attempt the game winning shot and using Kobe as a decoy was not the right move. You have to give Kobe the ball in that situation. And we all know Kobe wants the ball in the crunch time.

The good thing going for us is that we haven't lost at the Pepsi Center in the last 16 games... the bad news is that streaks are made to be broken... I just hope NOT YET! :r

Either way, this series is shaping up to be a good tight series and both East and West Finals... the average win margin for all 3 games so far is a whole 2 points! The officiating has been garbage. VanGundy had a great quote last night when asked about how to contain Lebron the rest of the game. He said 'We have to force him to shoot outside, when he puts in on the floor he gets foul calls everytime.' and he is about right. I agree that JR finally woke up in a game and he did it at a great time. I just hope they can keep their energy going and go beat the Lakers at Staples tomorrow night. I hope JR found his shot and can give them the spark of the bench they need to finish this series and send the Lakers packing till next year.

As for Jones tripping Kobe, I disagree that it was 100% intentional... and if it was, Kobe has thrown quite a few elbows this series that didn't get called and didn't get disciplined later...as for Jones getting suspended, Kobe himself said it wasn't anything expect he tripped over his foot, so Idk how the league would do anything about it.

Now onto Melo... I have to disagree with ya kelmac07... Anthony never plays that bad unless he is legitimately sick... I know I have watched a TON of games and even his bad days are better than he played last night. I doubt it was a media ploy. Is he as consistent as Kobe? No. Is he as good a scorer as Kobe? Should be interesting and anything is possible. Orlando is quite capable of packing up early as they have proven many times in the past.

I'll never forget the 95 finals against Houston. Nick Anderson only needed to sink one free throw and missed 4 consecutive and they never got over it. Made Shaq look like a good free throw shooter.

Speaking of free throws, I am amazed that Lebron can hit a fade away 3 pointer with 1 second left and seems to struggle from the free throw line and missed around 40% in game 3's 4th quarter....

Magic move up 3-1 after the overtime win last night. Cleveland just looks lost on defense. They go out to guard the 3-ball and they just feed it inside. Cavs double inside, Dwight finds the open 3. Cavs also are having trouble with the pick and roll. It is hard to beat a team that has been shooting so great from 3-point land.

Never seen a performance like Lebron's tonight? Try against the Pistons the season the Cavs played in the NBA finals. Lebron scored 20+ straight points and there was nothing the Pistons could do to stop him. That game against the Pistons in the Playoffs was the best performance I've ever seen from Lebron.

Our local news sure feels that the fix is in, but we're all very aware that nobody is rooting for Orlando except for the people who live here.

Once Lebron gets rolling, puts his shoulder down, a foul is on the way.

Yeah I'm hoping the Nuggets can win tonight and at least force a game 7... I mean winning 2 games in the Conf finals is our best performance ever in the post season LOL... So if we win 3, I can say we set a new personal best and maybe in another 30+ years we will actually make the finals! :r (of course I am still hoping the Nuggs can pull back and beat the Lakers cuz we need a finals berth more than they do!)

Seriously though, I am rooting for Orlando... I would love to see a Nuggets/Magic matchup to ruin all the media hype of Lebron v Kobe... although I think Denver would have an easier time with the cavs than with the Magic...

Something that I noticed last night was how much trouble Cleveland has with guarding Dwight. I mean it has been happening all series, but Orlando seems to go to him then move away from him at times. I would say Orlando needs to just feed Dwight in the next game and ride him to a W. Just like Cavs rode Lebron last night, do the same with Dwight.

In 2010 look for Rasheed Wallace to be in a Cavs uniform. He can definitely guard Dwight in a 7 game series and take him out of the game. The Pistons always did a great job guarding Dwight and Rasheed was a huge reason. Although Sheed can disappear at times, Cleveland could use his post defense against Dwight. You all heard it here first, Sheed to Cavs, Cavs 2010 NBA Champs.

It makes a lot of sense to me that the NBA is giving both teams a break before they start the next series. The NHL really blew it by making the Stanley cup a few days later and then having back to back games 1-2. It is good to see the NBA knows how to run their league.

I really don't like basketball much, but I need to inject my :2 now that the finals are set.

Here's hoping the Magic can pull off the upset and send Kobe the cryer home empty handed. It can be done and the Magic should play with a lot of confidence after destroying King James and his Cavs. It made me very happy that they foiled the NBA's prefered matchup of Kobe vs LeBron.

And Christos, your very correct about the scheduling thing with the NHL. I'm not a conspiricy nut, but this front loaded schedule is just crazy and could be and is seen by many as a advantage for the younger Pens. And we all have to be aware of the NHL's subtle wish of title for Sid the Kid. Back to back games in the finals for the first time since 1955! What a joke.

I know return you to your NBA thread.

I personally think the Magic have a similar situation with the Lakers; a guy who will score at will and a pretty good supporting cast. I put Kobe above Lebron though and definitely put the Lakers bench way above the Cavs'. The Magic have their hands full and will be in trouble quick if the don't play well every night. Home court means nothhing with Orlando as they play as good, or better on the road.

By last night, you could see the frustration on the whole Cleveland team after the 1st quarter as well as Lebron's fatigue from carrying them for 14 postseason games.

If the magic played like they did against Cleveland, they have a chance. I know it's the playoffs, but the magic handled LA much like they handled Cleveland during the regular season, but swept LA in the two games they played. Should be interesting.

I think we may have seen Lebron play his last game in Cleveland, but could be wrong.

I find it hard to bet against Kobe losing two championships in a row. But the Magic provide a serious match-up problem for the Lakers. I like the Magic to win this series (providing Dwight stays out of foul trouble). LeBron has one more year in Cleveland..but unless they get some serious help...HE IS GONE!!! Turkall (sp?) and Lewis provide serious match-ups problems for the Lakers...they can drive, pass, or shoot the three. Should be an awesome series.

One thing many people over looked in the Cavs/Magic series (including myself), was Cleveland's abysmal record against the elite teams. 3-6 against Orlando, LAL, and Boston (espn.com). Cleveland handled all the bad teams and took care of business when they needed to. The problem with the Cavs was they had no help for Lebron. Mo Williams is their only decent help for Lebron, but he isn't even considered top 10 point guards in the league. Magic have 3 players that have been playing fantastic for the Magic. Dwight, Hedo and Rashard Lewis. With the way they have been playing and no help for Lebron this was inevitable. I don't think Lebron will make a big stir but if the Cavs don't make improvements in the offseason (true SG and a dominant big man) he will walk in 2010 as a Free Agent.

I'm definitely looking forward to see the Magic and Lakers. The way these teams play each other will be a huge chess match. While the Lakers have size down low I don't think they are tough enough to handle Dwight. The problem is the Magic have no depth after Dwight. So if the Lakers use up their fouls on Dwight they could eventually wear on him and make him ineffective. I also want to see how the matchup at the PG position goes. Neither team to me has an advantage there. Both Alston and Fisher should not be starters. Alston is not smart with the ball and takes poor shots. Fisher still thinks he is in his prime and is going to lead this team to a victory. It amazes me watching him just pull up for bad shots. Fisher is at his best when he listens to Kobe.

As for the issue of guarding Kobe, the Magic just need to limit the damage. They did a great job against Lebron but Kobe is a much different player. Much smarter and definitely a better closer. Pietrus should be the primary defender but I don't know if he will be able to keep up. I'm definitely looking forward to all of this. Especially the nut-cases coaching both teams.

I can't imagine seeing an NBA title in this "little pond of a town" as Shaq called it when he bailed after our last trip to the finals.

The city is known for theme parks but never had a decent professional sports team and we're forced to root for Tampa teams, which I refuse to do.

It would really be cool if the Magic could pull this off as they won't fly under the radar after this year anymore.

Jameer is the type of guy who winds up on the floor a few times a quarter diving for loose balls and banging it up with the big boys.

If he does indeed return to the form he was in before getting hurt, Orlando just got a lot better for the finals.

That was a lot of fun, probably the largest spontaneous public celebration I've ever witnessed or been a part of.

However, that was years ago and this a completely different team. I still think the jury is out as to whether or not they are good enough to win. One thing is for sure though. the psychological weight of falling behind in a series only grows larger as the other team's lead expands.

Kobe had a bad finish in that game. Oh well it is part of life. For every one game he has like that he has 5 others that he dominates. I believe this will be over in 5, at the most 6.

Magic sadly will probably watch LA celebrate very soon, maybe even on their home floor tonight. Not a chance of coming back from a 3-1 deficit, but a 2-2 tie with another at home would have made things interesting.

It was a great run that could have ended differently, but the Magic showed their youth and were outcoached in this finals, but not outplayed in my opinion, with the exception of Kobe of course.

Games 2 and 4 were tough to watch if you are one of the very few rooting for Orlando and the missed free throws at the end reminded many of us of Nick Anderson back in 95. For God's sake, you can't ice the game and hit just 1?

Lots of things could have been done differently, especially at the guard position.

I have a feeling it won't be another 15 years before the Magic return to the finals, and in my narrow mind, they showed that they deserved to be there this year.
