View Full Version : I've Not Written Off Any Brands Yet

It may just be me, but I have yet to write off any particular brand of cigar. Not to say I have anything against someone who will not purchase a certain brand because of any reason. That's your choice. There are a lot of things I don't like just on a matter of principle.

After smoking many cigars, somewhere in the thousands, I have come to the conclusion I can pretty much find something good from someones hand rolled collection of beauties.

I have to wonder though, when someone smokes (inset cigar here) that they feel is bad inevitably the next words out of their mouth is this brand is crap, I'll never smoke another ____ again. As I said, that is your choice, but you may be missing out on a really fine smoke.

Ok, I can go along with the Cremosa, but I have tried a few of the Acids that were not all that bad.

people hate on acids because they are sweet and their image is "young and badboy-ish". For me, i smoked a Kuba Kuba just to see what all the hype was about and i actually enjoyed it, not an everyday smoke but sometimes you just want something different. You can judge me until your face turns pink, i enjoyed it.

I'm going to try an acid one of these days - for real. I got one in a MAW a while ago.

I've smoked one Acid, it was the Kuba Kuba. I smoked it literally for about 1/8" and couldn't do it. Too sweet for me, not to mention the sweeted tip that left my mouth feeling like I had ate a pixy stick.

But I have a buddy who loves em. So like they say, to each their own.

The Nubs do not live up to the hype, but I remember one out of a sampler I tried was ok. In my opinion the ring gage is too large for such a short cigar. But I would not write off Olivia because of the Nub. They make some of my favorites!

I have written off Acid and Cremosa's

I have tasted a Cremosa, it wasn't that bad. I have had much worse. I have tasted an Acid. A Kuba Kuba, it was very sweet, not really my thing but my buddy loved it. :2

If you like it smoke it who gives a flying^&^$$# what I think.:2

Yes and no. I agree, smoke what you like, but at the same time, I take a lot of people at face value here who say a cigar is good or bad. I don't necessarily write off a cigar just because someone here says it sucks, but if I know that they like a lot of smokes that I like, and hate a certain stick, I will take it into consideration before I try one.
I like a lot of sticks that people here hate, but I also agree w/ a lot of people about cigars too.

I was just saying if you enjoy it then it shouldn't matter what others think. I do the same thing, I read what others think but I still wnt to try for myself. If I like it then that is all that I care about.

Anything made/produced by:

Rocky Patel (particularly the "R4", Fusion, Indian Tabacs, & Sun Grown)
Rolando Reyes (Puros Indios, Roly, Cienfuegos, etc)
Nestor Plasencia (El Mejor Espresso, Nestor Reserve, etc)
Nick Perdomo (ESV, Habano, Reserve lines, etc)
Victor Sinclair
Felipe Gregorio

I'm pretty tolerant, but the ones I've listed are exxed off my list for good. I'm tired of pitching sticks, and life's just too short. I know I'll probably catch flack for the Rocky Patels & Perdomos but after 12 years of serious cigar smoking, I have never been dissapointed by a cigar line more often than those two. Sad too, because when I first smoked the Perdomo Reserves back in 2000, I really really liked them.

Just for comparison, notice that I haven't exxed off Drew Estates ;). For me to exx something off the list, it's got to disagree with me pretty hardcore.

I agree, John and others, that you should try lots of cigars, and form your own opinions, not write off a line due to others' opinions or limited experience. Smoke what you like, like what you smoke. :)

That being said, I have smoked enough cigars from the brands I have sworn off of to have my own educated opinion, and make no apologies for those opinions.

Perfectly logical to give up on a brand if you don't get anything you care for. I am pretty hard headed, or maybe just curious, and will keep trying anything new that comes out even if it is from a maker that has not thrilled me in the past.

I've written off Acid due to consistent headaches and naseau as a result of smoking them.
At one time I had written off CAO and now I'm giving them a fair shake again and finding many of them to be quite enjoyable.

This is "Weird"! Had a Puros Indios on a Cruise & it was fantastic! Bought a box when I got home, let them rest 3-6 months or longer, and smoked 3-4. Each one tasted like dog S**T! Must have been the Cruise!:)

Amen to that.

But in the case of this thread, for me there is a difference between trying and buying. There are certain brands that I will never again lay down cash for based on so many bad experiences. However, if somebody said, "Here...try this new blend from _________" I would try it with an open mind.

It's hard, if not impossible for me to write off an entire line. For me, variety is part of the fun. I tend to like much of what I smoke. But I was so close to writing off CAO. Until I tried the Brazilia. That's one fine cigar. Haven't tried to GOL and Italia yet, but I'm thinking I'll like those as well. But didn't like the others I tried, including the MX2.

Very close to my experience with CAOs as well....the only ones I really liked were the Brazilias, and that's they only reason I didn't write the line off.

For the record, I tried the Italias, thinking much like you did...but I did not care for them al all.

I'll agree to that with one exception, they don't live up to the hype FOR ME. I've smoked quite a few cigars, not as many as some and more than others, I have yet to find one that I dislike so much I've ruled it out.

So far I have managed to stay away from both Gurkha and Rocky Patel, want to try a couple of each, but with the reviews read so far have no idea what to go for. Was told I should try The Beast and Edge Sumatra.

In general, I stay away from Dominican tobacco, so not brands per se, but a region I have written off.

I like the Brazil, enough to buy a box of Gols, which are my favorite. Another CAO I really enjoy is the 10th Anniversary Perfecto Maduro, are really fabulous smoke. The CAO Criollo Pampa is an excellent small smoke, but I do not care a lot for the larger sizes. I will pick up an Italia Ciao anytime there is a pack on sale, they are a great yard gar. I agree on the MX2, they never did anything for me. The Black Bengal is another one I will get if on sale. Has a nice smooth quality to it.

My favorite Gurkha is the Lengend series with the Anniversario being my favorite. The rest of the Gurkhas I have not been wild about but do not dislike. The Edge Sumatra is Rocky's best IMO but I always have a box of the OWR Corjo Robusto and Cuban Blend Torpedos on hand. Also have a box of the I-Press Extreme Toro which is a pretty good smoke. The Decade is also a good line but I only purchase them when on sale for $5 or less.
