Never was a huge Dennis Leary fan until someone lent me Season one on DVD this winter. I bought the next 3 seasons, and went through them all in about a week and a half. Now I have been jonesin' for a couple months for Season 5.

Best part, the first 4 seasons were 13 episodes each...this season is 22 episodes. :tu

Hate to be the spoil sport, but I HATE Rescue Me! I'll be honest I've never given the show a fair shake. I've only ever seen a few episodes. The reason I've never cared for it is because it started shortly after 9/11 when the entire country was holding firefighters high on there shoulders. People were pouring out their support for firefighters and FDNY so Fox decides to cash in on it.

Not to mention I've read about at least one department that is in the process of suing the Denis Leary Firefighters Foundation for money that it promised. The dept. spent money on much needed equipment, but the money never showed up.

I'm sure it's an entertaining show and all but it's not for me.

Trent, the first season premiered on July 21, 2004, so it was almost 3 full years after 9/11. It hardly "cashes in" on the esteem that firefighters are held in, it shows them with more problems than the average Joe.

The Leary Firefighters Foundation, since its creation in the year 2000, has distributed over $2.5 million (USD) to fire departments in the Worcester, Boston, and New York City areas for equipment, training materials, new vehicles, and new facilities.

A separate fund run by Leary's foundation, the Fund for New York's Bravest, has distributed over $2 million (USD) to the families of the 343 firemen killed in the September 11, 2001, attacks in addition to providing funding for necessities such as a new mobile command center, first responder training, and a high-rise simulator for the FDNY's training campus. This new fund was established because the families of the Worcester fire did not want to include New York families into the fund. As a result, Leary created a separate fund for New York.

I could find no news reports of any Fire Department suing Leary's foundation.

No biggie if the show ain't your cup of tea, but I think Leary's people have done some wonderful things for firefighters, so I wanted to respond with what I have seen regarding those comments. :)

It was the first show about FDNY post 9/11, and even though it was almost three years after 9/11, firefighters were more revered then ever. IMHO it was a convenient time to produce a series about fireman especially FDNY.

I couldn't seem to find anything about it either. Firehouse is where I read about it, but I'm not sure where the story went. The story went into LFF having finical trouble. The dept. was a larger city dept. who purchased an equipment truck. The contracts were signed and the vehicle was built. When it came time for delivery there was no money. The manufacture was on the dept. for the money because of the contract and the dept. was going after LFF because they awarded them the grant.

I'm not saying Dennis Leary hasn't done a ton of good for the fire service. I'm just not into the TV show, but I will admit I assumed LFF was created after Rescue Me. I didn't know it was created in 2000 to honor his cousin.

well... i'd say about the last thing this show does is glorify the fiirefighters. really shows them with all their warts, for the most part.

It was not my intent to imply Fox was attempting to glorify firefighters with the show. It's simply my opinion that Fox decided to produce a TV series about FDNY Firefighters in the wake 9/11. Even if it was almost 3 years past, it was still very fresh in the hearts and minds of every American. FDNY was in the forefront of the disaster, and in my opinion Fox knew a show such as Rescue Me would have a high probability of succeeding.

I'll state again though, I've only seen a couple episodes. It may be an extremely entertaining show, but I don't care for it due to the reason I feel it was produced.

I enjoy the show and try to watch it with some of my firefighter buddies (they are firemen, I am not). I know all the great things that the brave men and women of these fire companies do so actually seeing the "real" side of these people portrayed to me is enjoyable. Good show and I have been a Leary fan since seeing "The Ref".

Of course that is true, Trent, a network would be foolish to produce a show that they didn't think had a high probability of succeeding.

I think, based on Leary's actions before the show was produced (i.e, his Foundation, started in 2000 even before 9/11), his motivation for making the series may have been a bit more heartfelt than simply capitalizing on 9/11. :2

That's what I figured from the moment it was obvious the viewer was in Tommy's dream. Did anyone else catch the name on the back of the firefighter who was stumbling around at the end of the dream? Looked a lot like "Keefe" to me, and I don't think he was dreaming about the dead one...

Also, the Jergens segment was hilarious. It must be a blast to write for this show, but I have to wonder where they come up with some of the more obscure stuff... Perhaps personal experience? :r

Jimmy Keefe was his name. He died in the 2nd tower collapse. Earlier in this season Tommy was all F'd in the head because he thought Jimmy had died in the first tower.

Huge fan of the show... the thing is, alot of the stuff that goes on in the firehouse (the humourous parts) are maybe a bit over exagerated, but for the most part, not out of reason. Lots of stupid funny silly stuff goes on. Ya gotta be pretty wacked in the head to run into a burning building, which the group of guys on the show portray it 100%

I've always said that if handcuffs are what it takes to really get my girl enthusiastic, then okay. I'm not a stubborn man. But make sure I'm handcuffed to something like a lamp or a rotary telephone. Something I can hit the broad with if she runs into the kitchen and grabs a paring knife.

Last night might have been the funniest episode of the entire series. The whole wedding thing was hilarious.
