I have some JR gift certificates that I want to use up, but the catch is I can only spend them on Altadis brands.
The list of Altadis handmades is here:
http://www.altadisusa.com/cigar/handmade.asp

I just wanted to get the Inmates opinions on which the best spend was.

I like the RyJ Habana Reserve robustos. It's a nice, consistent stick, and is well-made.

I'd go with the SLR Serie G in maduro or the Maria Guerrero 444. Theres also Gispert if you're into the mild stuff. Monte Whites are good but their price tag is way out of line.

I'd look for a flavor profile that you like, then check the JR website to see if there are any brands on their "SChip" clearance. You may be able to get a little more bang for your buck. Consider a bunch of 5'ers instead of a box. That way you try different cigars. They do have some Altadis samplers that my qualify.

Oh, BTW, JR's weekly special (through Wednesday) is a whole bunch of 5'ers, pick as many as you want & only pay one shipping rate of $2.50 instead of $2.50 for each one of them. Bunch of Altadis among them.
Could be the right time to cash in that certificate.

Te-Amo all the way. Nothing like a Mexican puro. :r

I would go with the Monte Whites if it was me. You could always sell the certificates at a discount to someone that might actually enjoy some of those cigars.

Another vote for the RyJ Habana Reserve.

You may also want to consider the Da Vinci Masterpiece. I haven't tried them myself, but have heard they were decent. Even if they don't float your boat, they are cheap and offer a nice presentation making it a good giveaway cigar. They are on the s-chip sale list for $2.50 or less a stick.

I'm really impressed with the Montecristo Reserva Negra, the new maduro. A little pricey though. Omar is a fine smoke as well, and a little easier on the wallet.

Least bad Altadis. :hm

I think that's kind of like asking where's the best place is to get a boil. :o

Okay - an honest question deserves an honest answer. Here's my best shot. Once I received a free Altadis Montecristo White Torpedo. I think it was a sample. It wasn't bad in the sense it had some decent flavor and the construction was pretty good. While I won't judge any cigar based on a sample of one, and I wouldn't run out and buy more considering their price point, I'd probably smoke another if it were given to me.

Now should the embargo end, ask me again about Altadis.

Thanks for all the good suggestions on this, I sat down and read the fine print a little better. Apparently, it's not just Altadis I'm restricted to - it's only the following four brands :(
Romeo Y Julieta
H. Upmann
Trinidad
Montecristo

Since Trinidad and H. Upmann just released new cigars, I might go with one of them.

Those aren't bad. Romeo y Julieta Aniversario and Reserva Real are pretty good, and you could do worse than Trinidads. The H. Upmann Reserve Maduro and Vintage Cameroon are pretty nice. Montecristo has yet to make a good cigar though.

Delicious.

This might be your chance to try them. I don't know of anyone who has. They've barely just begun to trickle into B&Ms in these parts, but Trinidads sell like urinal cakes around here. My B&M has boxes of original release, just taking up shelf space.

The Monte Reserva Negra is the best maduro (coming from Mad-Al) I've ever smoked. The San Luis Rey Series G Natural was an excellent smoke too.
