View Full Version : iPhone Cigar App ... need beta testers
After a steep learning curve, I'm finally winding up development of my first iPhone application. It's called Mobile Stogie and looks a lot like the web version that I did at the end of last year (link (http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=4579)).
The big difference with this version is that it's a native app that runs on both iPhone and iPod touch, has a local database so network access is not required, and has an inventory section in addition to the reference section.
Here's a teaser screenshot:
http://i276.photobucket.com/albums/kk40/saywake/Default.png
I'm posting now to ask for a few beta testers (maximum of 6, as I don't want to go crazy with feedback :)). If you are interested, and honestly willing to actively test the app and provide feedback, please post below and I'll PM you back with details to get the app installed.
I am hoping for about a week to 10 more days of testing and refinement before shipping it off to Apple to post on the App Store, so I'm looking for pretty quick feedback.
I'll also offer a nice 5'er of cigars as a thank you for the most active and constructive beta tester :tu

Not sure if the spots are full...but if not, I'm in
I have 7 beta testers now (and a couple of local guys that have done the 'alpha testing' for the past few weeks). I don't think I can handle the traffic of more than that, so I'm going to limit it to those already contacted. I do need a few of them to still provide me information to get this round of testing started (there is a strict technical protocol for iphone app beta testing), so if I don't get the necessary info quickly, I may ask for a couple more people.
I thought it would be ready for release this weekend, but found a couple more bugs that highlighted the need for better testing, so that's why this round is important. I want this to function really well on initial release.
Thanks for the interest, and I'll keep you posted...

WOW!! Can you do cool sh!t like that for BB's?
Nope :)
This was an incredible learning curve for me just to do this. I'm an IT guy, but hadn't done "real coding" in many years. I figure with this economy, it was a good time to develop a backup skillset.
Besides, the blackberry doesn't have nearly the application capabilities of the iPhone, as far as I can see. I use a BB for work, but rely on my iPhone for 'real' mobile apps. Not trying to start a BB vs. iPhone flame war, so take that as just my opinion ;-)

Look forward to buying this when it's released.
Well, two of my beta testers did not send me the necessary information to include them in the first beta release, but I want to get this started, so I've sent the app to 5 testers tonight. I'll wait until sometime tomorrow to see if I get response from the other two guys (you know who you are ;)). If not, then I'll probably add a couple more from the earlier responses on this thread.
In the meantime, if you are beta testing the app now, please post feedback on this thread, as there seems to be enough interest to share the information publicly (even if is just a teaser :D).
Again, I am hoping to release this to the app store in a week to 10 days max, so quick feedback is greatly appreciated.
In the meantime, here's another screen shot to keep people interested :)

Details:
Fields could start with a forced capital letter
Notes delete if you try to edit. Can only be several charachters.
Alignment of multiple humidors is off.
More to come....but really exciting app so far.

Ah, some actual feedback; excellent! ;). I guess that means it installed ok.
- The crashing bug you noted first has been fixed. This beta had a bad bug in the humidor add/delete code, but I have it fixed (I hope). It would be great if you could PM me the details of the steps to reproduce that, so I can verify that I have it fixed before releasing beta 2.
- The forced capital letter is a good idea. I think I can do that pretty easily.
- The notes portion is the weakest part right now, and you noticed right away :). I will change that to a more robust and larger notes field. This is only a placeholder for now until I do the "Smoking Notes" feature (likely a version 2 feature).
- I'm looking into alignment on the multiple humidors. They should line up better after you exit the app, and come back in (but still need to be fixed).
Glad you like the app overall. Thanks for the help :tu

To start:
Notes delete if you try to edit. Can only be several charachters.
This one is now fixed as well. It now presents a larger text area to enter multiple lines of notes (even scrolls for very long entries). I'll include this in beta 2 as well...
Keep the feedback coming!

The trick to building out the database is to get somebody willing to update the web site that I started to collect info last december for all the cigar info. I pull data from that site to populate the default database for the iPhone native app. At the moment, the app doesn't automatically connect to get updates, so I have to do that as part of the app release process.
Let me know what cigars are needed, and I'll see if I can get my son to add some of 'em.

"download"? I emailed the app to you; you should not need to download anything. If, however, you are using webmail of some flavor then maybe Safari suspects that site? Seems odd to me.

Weird right? The zip file doesn't give the warning, however after safari virus scans the actual file, says it's clear and I click download it goes to the warning page. Didn't make sense to me either. This is just on the Mobile_Stogie_Beta_Profile.mobileprovision (8KB) file.
I will restart and see if that fixes the issue.

v2 of your app could be
- click cigar and it will load up current online prices of the top 5 online sellers.
(charge if a vendor wants to be part of top5/top10??)
- click cigar and get reviews of the cigar
- click cigar and locate nearest cigar shop!
Your app is wicked cool!

It's definitely a glitch in my macbook, maybe with safari 4 beta. It does it for any app in my webmail. I haven't downloaded in safari 4 yet, so who knows.

Thanks for the ideas. I've been toying with jumping from the app to web related information, based on currently selected cigar. I like your ideas, and they aren't as difficult to implement as I once thought.

Ken,
First I gotta say this app rocks! I have added the Padron 40's and 80's under the padron 1926 section, worked great. I have had it crash a couple times, however I can never seem to reproduce it. Once, while adding a new cigar to a humidor, and the second time while editing the quantity before selecting the humidor. This said I have done this over 50 times while adding additional cigars/humidors and not reproduced it. One thought while in the add cigar page, is it possible to modify all settings, humidor, quantity, etc without saving each time, and just doing one final save? Finally the Rocky Patel list is very slim, missing the edge, 1990,92 etc. I know this is minor just updating. At any rate, I can't wait for my next B&M trip with this which brings up one last thing. When adding cigars to your humidor, or wish list maybe a msrp field would be good so you know when shopping around what prices are and what the msrp is? A price paid may also be nice to track cc and non cc alike as prices flucuate between stores? Thanks again, this app is great!

Ok, sorry one more. From cigar reference, you can add a cigar, click brand, scroll through and add the pertinent information. My suggestion would be to allow this from inside the cigar brand, IE if I go into Rocky Patel, see that the Edge is missing, it would be nice to add it from that screen, rather then backing out. Currently the edit only allows deleting of existing cigars.

The good news is that the crashing behavior you describe is consistent with what I already knew about, and is fixed for the next beta release.
Also, regarding the "modify all settings, humidor, quantity, etc without saving each time, and just doing one final save" question, that is also already done for adding new cigars to your humidor. However, when editing a cigar that is already in the humidor, then each field will save independently (likely will be far fewer fields being changed). So, I think I have this one covered as well for beta 2.
The bad news is that you've added a lot of cigars to your personal database, but (during the beta process), those will be overwritten by the new beta code. I need to get those added to the default database as well.
I'll PM you with an idea of how I can get the data from your iPhone to leverage the work you've already done...
Finally, the price suggestion sounds good, but I'm wondering if you have specific ideas of where it should be implemented? I fear this could be complex to populate, but maybe just provide a place if the user wants to add pricing?
Thanks for the testing!!
Got one more, Would be nice when editing the humidor list or wish list if you could actually edit the names, etc seems currently you can only delete when selecting edit.
believe it or not, this might be a little compicated to code. One workaround in the meantime is to add a new humidor with the new name, then "delete" the existing humidor, and you'll be offered the chance to move the existing cigars to another humidor. Select the newly added one, and you'll have essentially renamed your humidor. Can you test that for me?
Thanks

This is the one that my son consistently tells me too. I need to figure out where to put the "Add" button on that screen. The edit button is already in the most obvious spot. I'll look into it though, as I agree it would be good to have it there.

ok, I'm about ready to build and release a 2nd beta version of Mobile Stogie, based on input from first round of tests.
Since a few of the testers were unable to make time to provide feedback, I'd like to open this round up for 3 more testers.
If you are interested, and:
1. Can honestly spend some time with the app and provide feedback over the next few days
2. Can respond quickly to requests for needed info about your iPhone or iPod Touch, so I can setup the app to install for you.
3. Want to make the app better for the rest of the BOTL's
Please post back in this thread, and I'll add 3 more testers to the next round.
Again, I'm looking to finalize the app and send it to Apple by mid/end of next week, so quick turnaround on feedback is important. If you honestly can't make the time over the next few days, then please wait for the public release.

Ken,
Unfortunately, I came down with that 72 hour bug that has me hacking and trying to coughing a lung out.
But, I've been adding and deleting cigars to the current database since I've been sitting at home.
You've apparently gotten the first thing I found fixed, which was the "forced capital" on the keyboard... most iPhone apps do this so it's a distraction to try and go back on each entry. :tu
There are a number of sticks that aren't listed that I have in my humidor, especially Gurkhas, RP's and Macanudos in the NC section. I have about 150 sticks in there now, and when I get to work, I'll add some more from my work humidor.
I have only had the app crash twice in all the time I've been using it. Everyone who sees it has really liked it; I did attend a herf last night, even sick, and a number of BOTLs who saw it mentioned that maybe it was time to get an iPhone or iTouch! :D
I'm still working with the app, but other the couple of things I mentioned, I haven't had a lot to report.
Be back with more data soon....

Anyway, I got the issues sorted out and so far I've seen a few items left out of the reference cigars.
The Fuente Maduros aren't listed. These include several of their regular lines, but the only wrappers listed are the cameroons (and sun growns listed separately). CAO and Don Pepin are missing several lines as well. La Flor as well.
Also, some cigars don't have a size option, ie La Aurora 100 Anos.
It seems adding a cigar is cumbersome. For instance, when you add a cigar, it asks to a humidor or a wishlist. This is fine. The next screen to add it to the humidor is the cumbersome part. I'd like to see it default to the humidor if you only have one entered. If there is more than one, then have it default to a preselected default chosen by the end user. There is also something I don't like about the screen you enter the cigar info to add it, but I don't know how to make it better. I'd like to see pop up windows that direct the user through the required info, and keep the non required info like box code separate and on a similar screen they are on now.
The app seems VERY cuban oriented, which I think will be a mistake when it comes to the majority of american users. Seems like it'd limit your audience.
Also, I didn't have ANY of the crashing issues that others were having when adding or deleting humidors, cigars, or anything.

Allow a field to let you add notes to 'review' your own cigar for your inventory.
There is a "Notes" field in beta 2, where you can enter as much text as you want. A future version will have a much more robust "Smoking Notes" area, but that isn't designed and thought through yet.
Thanks for the suggestion
I guess I also didn't realize the timeline you were working with.
No worries :tu. I'm glad you got it working, but I also understand that people have lives with more important things going on. Any help is appreciated, but the timeline pressure is my own self-imposed pressure.
Thanks.

One quick learning for me is that the reference database is the key value here, so yeah, I really need to build out the NC data. Unfortunately, a lot of that info is all over the map, whereas the CC data was much easier to find concisely (Wikipedia and a couple of internet sites have a lot of it captured very concisely).
Also, some cigars don't have a size option, ie La Aurora 100 Anos.
I think that's an exception rather than a rule, but I'll make sure it can show up blank if it's not needed.

I'd like to see pop up windows that direct the user through the required info, and keep the non required info like box code separate and on a similar screen they are on now.
Excellent point. I will see what I can do with this. Fundamentally, the only 'required' info is Humidor and Quantity, so those should be prompted more efficiently. I like that idea.
The app seems VERY cuban oriented, which I think will be a mistake when it comes to the majority of american users. Seems like it'd limit your audience.
Agreed. I originally was adding the cigar data as an "extra", since users can enter their own anyway, but clearly this data is one of the value propositions of the app, so I need to get focused on the NC data.
Also, I didn't have ANY of the crashing issues that others were having when adding or deleting humidors, cigars, or anything.
With beta 1, as long as you add humidor first, it shouldn't crash, and that seems like the most intuitive way anyway. If you tried to enter quantity first, I can assure you it would have crashed ;). Beta 2 (due out today or tonight) will fix that so you can add 'em any way you want.
Great feedback. Thanks :tu

Ken, first suggestion for today(still beta1) under my cigars, it lists humidors, wishlist, etc. Might be nice to have the cuban, non-cuban option you get once you enter a humidor/wishlist.This would allow a view of the total # of a specific cigar, say if you have 5 cohiba's in one humidor, and 10 in another. It would allow a quick reference without going through multiple humidors for a inventory reference.

Let's see if I understand correctly. Essentially, you would like to see an "All Humidors" item in the humidors list? That way, you could drill down to view your collection as a whole, instead of by individual humidor.
Do I have that correct? (I hope so, because that is pretty straightforward to code ;)).
Update:
Beta 2 is now built; just waiting for some info from 2 beta testers to send it out. I think we're still on track for release in a week or so.
Here's an updated status:
Bug Fixes and Design Changes
FIXED: Application crash in certain situations adding or deleting a humidor
FIXED: Application crash in certain situations adding a cigar to a humidor
FIXED: No longer able to add a new humidor with the same name as an existing one
FIXED: Humidors with apostrophe character caused inconsistent behavior
FIXED: Detail page of non-cuban reference cigar was not displaying the "Filler" value
FIXED: Detail page of reference cigar was not displaying the "Box Code" value
CHANGED: Text entry now defaults to initial capital letters by word.
CHANGED: Notes field in My Cigars detail now allows multiple lines of text, with scrolling field.
CHANGED: Display the length as blank field instead of "(null) (0.0in.)" when no value is entered
DATA: Began cleaning up default database for improved consistency (more to come)
DATA: Additions to the cigar reference database (thanks beta 1 team!)
(Total is now up to 891 unique cigars in the database)
Working On:
Humidor names don't line up in certain circumstances
Ability to add new cigars from the Brand List
Need More NC's added to database
Improvements to data entry to streamline the process
Adding an "All Humidors" view to the My Cigars section.
Continued data cleanup
When viewing a "My Cigar" record, click a button to "Flip" to the details of that cigar.
(beta testers haven't asked for that yet, but they will :)).
Probably work on for future version:
Linking to external info on the web (pricing, reviews, B&M's, etc)
A field (or 2) to enter MSRP and/or price paid in the My Cigars section
Ability to edit humidor name (workaround currently exists)
A more robust "Smoking Notes" section of the App

One more screenshot for those that are watching but don't have the app. (the list scrolls for a few more items, like indicators for EL, RE and Discontinued.

Yet another screenshot, and a question: Notice that this cigar is an NC, so does not show the "Vitola" field, but does show "Binder", "Filler", and "Wrapper" (not necessary for CC's because they would all say "ISOM" anyway. In the 'my cigars' section, should I omit "Box Code" for NC's, or does that field apply in some way to NC's?

still debating the box code question, so answering with another question. :P So on the home screen, it lists cigar reference, my cigars, total unique wishlist. Is there a way that you could make those buttons to bring up a list of your cigars? So I could click on 107 total cigars, and it would open a table/list of the brand, type, and quantity of my cigars? The 891 unique list(button) would take you to the cigar referece page for all cigars?

Not quickly ;).
However, that is a good idea. Let me think about it for a bit to see what it would take. Then of course, you'd want links from that table/list, and links from that, and so on :D.
Can't quit my day job, so have to limit features for first official version.

KenS' son here, been helping test this since way back in the alpha stage. A page or so back someone mentioned the app's icon. I was the one who designed the icon so I have a question for the current beta testers; what do you think of it? Any suggestions for it, I think I've grown attached to it so I might overlook something on it so hearing someone elses opinion on it would be welcomed.

FWIW, I think this is a great idea as well (even though I only have two humidors).
Also, if you want a reference guide for a lot of NC cigars, Pearlman's or however it's spelled might be a wise investment. That being said, it will be extremely cumbersome to add all those cigars. I guess in the end it'll all pay off though. :wo

So version 1.0.1 seems very stable, no crashes at all since the upgrade. Default caps is very nice, notes field is working well also. I did notice in the nc that the Carlos Torano is listed twice, once with the tilda. Couple other cigars that need adding for the list, nc Cohiba's, Cusano18's, SLR(Sait Louis Ray), Juan Lopez. CAO list needs vast expanding. I know this list isn't a super high priority, just FYI. I've continued to modify my list as needed.
Ok, general question for anybody following this thread:
It's clear that the NC database needs to be improved, but I don't plan to key in a massive amount of 'em, since the end user has the ability to add anything they need to their own database. That said, I do want a fairly representative list. So far in the comments on this thread, the ones mentioned are Padron, God of Fire, Rocky Patel, Gurkha & Macanudos.
To capture a reasonable set of "mainstream" cigars, what others really need to be in the default list? We already have A. Fuente & Opus X fairly well covered. The rest actually just came from what I was tracking in a spreadsheet from my own NC collection several months ago.
So, what are the "gotta have" brands? (and, does anybody already have a list of info about them? Maybe a spreadsheet that you've been keeping??). If anybody had that info in a spreadsheet, text file, or anything else, I could pretty easily upload it all into the database...
Thanks :tu

Ken,
I dont know that you want to take on the overhead of developing the database. It might simply be easier to let people have the ability to update your database and then publish new updates that are pushed to the phones monthly. I'd be more than happy to support the development of the Cuban side of the database.

Boy do I agree with you on this...
The tough part is managing duplicates, not overwriting users DB, maybe even malicious strings (don't know if this is an issue in iPhone software etc)

Thoughts....
All Humidors - excellent idea!
Icon - I agree with the above, the Icon works great and symbolizes what we're trying to do with the app.
Box Code - I would agree that wrapper/binder/filler would be great for the NC's - Box code does nothing for the NC's I've bought; Definate need for BC in the CC section!

This is exactly my worry. The website is currently setup for others to enter data, but for now I require somebody to request a userid and password. That way, I can track who is adding what, but I certainly can't control what somebody chooses to do with the access.
The best way would be a few volunteers that we trust, populate the basics, and leave the unique stuff for individuals to add to their own iPhone database. After all, not everybody needs a huge library of cigars. Maybe some only want/need the stuff that they are interested in.

I think the Cuban side of the existing database is pretty complete (maybe 90 - 95% ?). What would be great is somebody verifying what is there, and identifying errors. Always a big manual chore.
I'm thinking through how to push out updates to the iPhone/iPod users now. The update mechanism for apps is easy, but the database part will be a little bit tricky, since people will likely have added some of their own to the reference side. Also, personal inventory is keyed to a unique identifier for each cigar, so I can't just change them around. It's an interesting puzzle for sure. We'll get there though :tu

Ken,

Me too; trust me, I have more ideas than I have time to implement ;).
My guess is that Beta 3 will be the last, maybe early next week, and I'll plan to publish final by end of next week (but who knows how long Apple will take to review and make available).
Obviously all suggestions and ideas won't be implemented, but I feel very confident in the stability at this point. I will continue to refine based on feedback and release updates via the app store as appropriate.
This is certainly an interesting ride, and I thank you all again for the help and feedback. First time I've tried something like this, and it can quickly be all-consuming :). But if interest continues, then I'll try to keep improving it to be as useful as possible (but I still have a day job :)). I would guess that a few months from now, this app could be very different than it is today, as I learn more and fold in the feedback.
Kudos to you for taking this on. I've been following this thread with much interest (I'm buying an iPhone at the end of the month when my Verizon contract expires).
I just came across this http://www.pcworld.com/article/161144/confessions_of_an_iphone_game_maker.html, which is a fun little read on app development similar to what you're going though.

Ken, stability has been perfect in version 1.0.1. One idea I came across, is to allow editing of the wish list. So if you have a cigar in the wish list, and then you select wishlist from the my cigars page you can currently only select the cigar type, then the cigar brand, then see the cigar, no details page like you would get from the humidor list. I think it would be good to be able to get to that last step, allowing notes etc. So right now, my wishlist has 1 cigar in it, I click wishlist, Cuban, it takes me to the Brand screen that I added to the list, I click that, say cohiba, it takes me to the cigar family/type. Then I can't go any further. If I were in a humidor at this point, I could drill down, put a note in saying, trying this on 3/13/09, was great, or something like that. Anyway, one more thing to think about for a future release.

Interesting, and there I went through a bunch of hoops to limit that drill down on the wishlist, figuring it wasn't relevant
I see your point though, and having it jump directly to the detail page, at least for recording notes would make some sense. Not drilling through the intemediate page though...
My brain is starting to hurt :)
sounds good...can't wait :tu
Wait no more ;). Your app has been emailed to you. Let me know if it installs correctly. I added a couple dozen Gurkha's to the database before sending it, so now the total reference database is over 900 stogies. Lots more to go on the NC side, but I was testing some db stuff this time around.
You are running slightly different code as well. I changed the humidor view so the alignment works a little better. I'll post a comparison later to get people's feedback on the appearance. In the meantime, you should be set for testing. Let me know please...

More Notes/Thoughts:
1. I think it was fixed but multiple humidors with same names can be added and act the same once they are added. Troubles with moving and deleting cigars.
2. Date Acquired allows future dates to be added.
3. Year of cigar would be slicker in the scroll wheel option instead of the keypad. Plus the keypad allows multiple digit entries.
4. Color customizing would be great in the future. Especially for different humidors.
5. Main database should be secure and not able to edit once it is complete. Perhaps you could pay someone in cigars to add everything? You could also sell yearly database downloads??? (Sorry guys...trying to help him make some money for all the work he is doing..)
6. Rating system Scroll Wheel as well. (I really dislike the keypad...although it is easy it doesn't feel as slick or refined as flicking the scroll wheel up and down.) Maybe i have a thing for the price is right or something.
7. Being able to edit reference homepage for other names than Cuban or Non-Cuban. As much functionality as possible for me.
8. instead of deleting cigars from humidors....assuming they are being smoked. Have a recently smoked feature that keeps them in the database but deletes them from inventory. This way you could compare notes from specific smokes.
9. Can it connect to Cigar Asylum in anyway???? recent smokes...etc...
I'll keep playing.
More Notes/Thoughts:

Yup, fixed in beta 2
2. Date Acquired allows future dates to be added.
yeah, I was gonna limit that up to current date, but figured if people want to go crazy with future dates, it's their own data they are messing with. What do others think?
3. Year of cigar would be slicker in the scroll wheel option instead of the keypad. Plus the keypad allows multiple digit entries.
Yup, I agree. See above for people messing with their own data though :)
4. Color customizing would be great in the future. Especially for different humidors.
Cool idea for version 2.

This one I really don't agree with. I want to make this useful for each individual, and people have different needs. Some folks don't need thousands of cigars in the reference, others will have cigars that I never heard of (especially in other countries). Also, the idea of adding "everything" is more daunting than I want to tackle. I'm not trying to make a business out this actually. Just started it as a hobby project because I wanted an app for personal use. Earning a few bucks back for my hundreds of hours of work on it would be nice, but still keeping it low key.
6. Rating system Scroll Wheel as well. (I really dislike the keypad...although it is easy it doesn't feel as slick or refined as flicking the scroll wheel up and down.) Maybe i have a thing for the price is right or something.
I'm with you on this one; that's why I added scroll wheels for brand, vitola, etc. What scale would be appropriate for rating? 1 - 100?[/QUOTE]
7. Being able to edit reference homepage for other names than Cuban or Non-Cuban. As much functionality as possible for me.
Tricky one to design I think. Do you have some specific examples to help me think about how to do it?
8. instead of deleting cigars from humidors....assuming they are being smoked. Have a recently smoked feature that keeps them in the database but deletes them from inventory. This way you could compare notes from specific smokes.
Definitely the most important version 2 feature. I want that functionality too ;)
9. Can it connect to Cigar Asylum in anyway???? recent smokes...etc...
I keep thinking about that as well. Again, specific examples of the interaction you'd like to see?
I'll keep playing.

BETA 3 Progress Update
FIXED: Humidor names don't line up in certain circumstances
FIXED: Ability to add new cigars from the list of cigars for a specific brand
DATA: Additions to the cigar reference database
(Total is now up to 919 unique cigars in the database)
Some Progress: Continued data cleanup
WORKING ON THIS NOW: Adding an "All Humidors" view to the My Cigars section.
REMAINING ITEMS FOR BETA 3:
Improvements to data entry to streamline the process
When viewing a "My Cigar" record, click a button to "Flip" to the details of that cigar.
(beta testers haven't asked for that yet, but they will :)).
Probably work on for future version:
Linking to external info on the web (pricing, reviews, B&M's, etc)
A field (or 2) to enter MSRP and/or price paid in the My Cigars section
Ability to edit humidor name (workaround currently exists)

Just got my I-touch! I can't wait for this to be published. :tu
More input needed :)
Here are two versions of the cigar listing for a particular brand. The one on the left is the current version. The one on the right is what I'm thinking of changing to. The thought is that having the size in the listing makes it easier to pick out a particular cigar from the list. But it is a bit 'busier' looking. With the newer view, I could also add a button to sort by RG or by Length.
Which do you like better??

I like the one on the right much better Ken. Like we discussed before- when you're searching through looking to figure out what a particular smoke is in your hand... it's easier to see the sizes up front instead of playing the guessing game clicking each name to see the size. my 2 coins. :)

This is becoming a nice little app as I continue to play with it. I am curious what you think of allowing the user to add a brand. I have several cigars that are out of production that are rarely heard off. It would be nice for me to be able to add those for the heck of it. Maybe a special selection humidor or something.

Just got done adding one of my vino's and I love the program. Was wondering why there is no month for CC cigars. I just entered it into the box code but think I'd like to have a month and year box. As for picking out the cigars I like the cleaner look on the left. Also where do I put my clear havana's? They are cuban and non cuban. :r

From the Cuban/Non-Cuban page, simply click the add button and add a new cigar. You'll have the opportunity to add a new brand to it. Any cigar in the reference section that has a unique brand will cause that brand to show up in the brand list. Nothing special about brand :)

Oh cool. For some reason I have over looked that I could add a new brand.
I am currently looking at the J. Fuego, it has one so far, the Corojo #1. I have the Corojo #5 I added it the the J. Fuego page. What I would like, instead of backing up to the cigar list, it would be nice to have an add button on the J. Fuego page. There is an edit button that allows me to delete the cigars on the J. Fuego page.
Did that make any sense?

yes, and that's done for the next beta release. If you look at the screenshots I posted earlier today, you'll see there is now a toolbar at the bottom of the page with "Add Cigar". This will make it much easier to complete a list of cigars for a particular brand. Is that what you mean?

Idea for how to connect w/ cigar asylum:
In the notes area perhaps making a button to "publish review" and have it make a new thread in the review section here at CA. Only problem that I can think of is for people who purchase the app not a member at CA....although maybe it would draw in new members?

Really need to improve the NC coverage in the database

Expect to get beta 3 out for final testing in the next day or so, and plan to submit to apple by end of this week :tu
Something else added new for beta 3...
Since it now shows length and ring gauge on the cigar listing screen, you can now sort by name, length or ring gauge. It looks like this. The second screenshot show the interface that slides up onto the screen when you touch the "Sort List ..." button.

Yes, obvious, since it's required. :)
There's no need to imply anything. I'm a WM user, and a cigar smoker. I have references on this board if I need them, though they probably don't know who I am right now heh. I think it'd be a cool thing to collaborate this project with someone to get it out there for the millions (yes, millions) who use Windows Mobile. I also think I'd use the heck out of it personally. Seems like a great app, that's all.

Sorry if you thought I implied that you might steal it. I know Ken was just fooling around with this at one point and poof now he spends all his spare time coding! He was even going to code at our weekly herf meeting. My post was my opinion leaving it ultimately up to Ken to decide the when and if parts. :2

danc,
No harm, no foul, and I don't blame you for asking. The reality is that somebody with knowledge of how to develop for Windows Mobile could quite easily borrow ideas from this app to code for wm. They could also fairly easily capture the data from this app if they had an iPhone or knew somebody who did.
The other reality is that the programming model for iPhone vs. Win Mobile is quite different, so it would be tough to actually leverage the code itself. That said, if a developer were to ask me about collaboration, it would be a low priority for me given the ideas I have to continue to develop the next version of Mobile Stogie, and I have a real job so this is just a (very time consuming) hobby for me. So they'd mostly be on their own.
I put a copyright notice on the app to protect myself, but I don't have a cadre of lawyers to pursue somebody copying it on the wm platform. I also wouldn't want to prevent fellow BOTL's from having a nice app for their wm devices if somebody took up that effort.
Bottom line is that it's tough to get too excited about a hypothetical situation. If somebody reaches out to me with real coding questions, I'd do what I could, but it probably wouldn't be much, given my time constraints.
Again, no harm, no foul :tu
Need more feedback today :)
As I build out the NC database content, it is becoming clear that I need to add a "Sub-brand" or "Line" field for many of the NC brands. For example, if I add Gurkha to the current database, I would have a separate "brand" for Gurkha Grand Reserve, Gurkha Legend, Gurkha Master Select, etc.
I'm thinking of adding a Sub-Brand field so that the brand is Gurkha, and then have a drilldown from Gurkha to a page showing the sub-brands of Grand Reserve, Legend, Master Select, etc. The same is true of Rocky Patel, Oliva, JPG and others.
The trick will become handling the situation where there is NOT a sub-brand for a given brand, or where sub-brand is not filled in for SOME of a particular brand, but is filled in for others.
How should the drilldown work?
Thoughts anybody??

Is there any way after the release for people to submit their cigar database (if they add things) to you to add to the main database for when you update?
Is there any way after the release for people to submit their cigar database (if they add things) to you to add to the main database for when you update?
Not sure how the update process will work yet. I'm thinking of a synchronization process that allows somebody to retrieve updates automatically, but I haven't designed this yet. It would have to be "non-destructive" for cigars that somebody has entered into his/her own app, so some matching process needs to be designed. I'm working on it :)
As for sending their changes in, I think the concern about getting garbage data, incomplete data, overwriting existing cigars, even malicious updates will prevent this from being a reasonable approach.

Asking the question in a simpler way: Do you consider Gurkha Grand Reserve, Gurkha Legend, Gurkha Master Select, etc. to be unique "Brands" (and therefore would count in the home screen count of "xxx Brands"), or do you consider those as all being "Gurkha" brand, and would only count once on that screen? I'm referring to this screen:

Seems to be a concensus. Not surprised, but just wanted to get a little feedback before changing things. What I've settled on is not to add another drilldown page for the subbrands, but rather just include them in the name of each cigar. The cigar listing screen will simply have some cigars with kinda long names, but I'll wrap the text appropriately. Early testing seems to show it will work fine.

I agree, no need to over complicate things. If someone really wants it that way, you do give them the options of adding more brands.
I had an interesting glitch the other day. The app got caught in a weird event, I was on a brand (I believe it was Cohiba CC) and as I tapped the back button, it turned the page, but I ended up on the same page. I tapped the back button several times, each time the page looked like it was changing, but it remained on the same page until the app closed out on its own. It has not happened since, I tried to see if it would happen again, but so far it has not happened again. I figured I would share.

I have seen something similar one time as well, but cannot reproduce it. I have been optimizing some of the code to reduce the memory footprint, so hopefully it gets cleaned up by that work. If it happens again, especially if you can reproduce it, please let me know.
Thanks.
Final update tonight:
Code changes are largely done for beta 3.
Added a Google button to the cigar detail page. Does a search for currently selected cigar.
Added many, many new NC's (thanks Lee and Jon!). Total cigar count is up to 1,151 (and growing), getting better balance between CC and NC.
Will try to get a final beta release out to the testers tomorrow. I think it's still on track for end of week submission to Apple. :wo

BETA 3 is ready, and heading out to the beta testers. I hope this is the final beta before release.
Changes from BETA 2:
FIXED: Humidor names don't line up in certain circumstances
IMPROVED: Cigars with long names now wrap to a second line instead of truncating with '...' added.
ADDED: Ability to add new cigars from the list of cigars for a specific brand
ADDED: Length and Ring Gauge on the Cigar Listing view
ADDED: Sort button on Cigar Listing view (by Name, Length, Ring Gauge)
ADDED: Google Button on the cigar detail page launches a browser with search for the selected cigar.(Do people think this is useful?)
DATA: Additions to the cigar reference database
(Total is now up to 1,161 unique cigars in the database)
Good Progress: Continued data cleanup
Good Progress: Code cleanup and memory optimization
REMAINING ITEMS BEFORE RELEASE:
STILL WORKING ON: Adding an "All Humidors" view to the My Cigars section.
Improvements to data entry to streamline the process
Probably work on for future version:
Linking to other external info on the web (pricing, reviews, B&M's, etc)
A field (or 2) to enter MSRP and/or price paid in the My Cigars section
Ability to edit humidor name (workaround currently exists)
A more robust "Smoking Notes" section of the App
When viewing a "My Cigar" record, click a button to "Flip" to the details of that cigar. (moved to Version 2)
(beta testers haven't asked for that yet, but they will :)).

Ken - Since putting beta 3 on my phone it keeps crashing, J/K. :r It is running smooth as can be. Sorry if these are dups, here is what I have. The sort feature is nice, but can a cancel button be added? Currently you have to select one of the options. I noticed you can't add a cigar brand to your humidor without putting in a quantity. Might be nice for the initial population purposes if you know you have a cigar but not the quantity, you could edit that later. the last thing is an edit option, where the only option is to actually delete it. From:my cigars, NC, Fuente Fuente Opusx(or any brand), list screen dbl robosto, churchill etc, the next screen, dbl robosto is listed, the edit option only allows you to delete it, if you go to the next/final screen you can edit the options, quantities etc. Next is the wish list, if you add a cigar, you can't see any details page, meaning: my cigars, wishlist, cc, Bolivar, Amado Seleccion E <end> should this end on the same page as the reference page where there are details on the cigar? Next is a feature request, if your in your wish list, how about an option to add that cigar to a humidor? Finally, a home button. If I'm knee deep in my cigars, and want to get back to my humidors/wishlist you currently have to back out. If you hit home, it takes me to the login screen, then if I click my cigars, I am back where I left.
Sorry for the long message, and if anything's not clear email or PM me and I can better explain.

I can help on this one! Hitting the section button will take you to the first screen of that section. For example, if you're in reference and you drill down to a cigar, hitting the reference button again will bring you back to the top. Works the same way for the My Cigars section.

Well, based on Apple's press release/video yesterday, they said the majority of applications were approved within 7 days.
The sort feature is nice, but can a cancel button be added? Currently you have to select one of the options.
How about if I simply highlight the current option, and if you don't want to change, then just click that one. The design guidelines suggest that more than three buttons on that alert panel is 'undesirable' :)
I noticed you can't add a cigar brand to your humidor without putting in a quantity. Might be nice for the initial population purposes if you know you have a cigar but not the quantity, you could edit that later.
I keep thinking about this one, but here's the question: On the home screen I list the total quantity in your humidors, and the number of "unique cigars". what if you had a cigar with quantity of 5 in your humidor, and 10 other cigars with quantity of 0. Those numbers would show:
5 Total Cigars
11 unique cigars
which looks kind of strange. Thoughts on how to manage that situation?

that button really means "edit list". It is pretty consistent with other iPhone apps in that regard. The challenge is allowing other editing without already having a cigar selected. Thoughts on behavior you'd like to see?
Next is the wish list, if you add a cigar, you can't see any details page, meaning: my cigars, wishlist, cc, Bolivar, Amado Seleccion E <end> should this end on the same page as the reference page where there are details on the cigar?
Yes, this is something I want to do, but might be a version 1.1 feature.
Next is a feature request, if your in your wish list, how about an option to add that cigar to a humidor?
Good idea, and probably pretty easy to implement. I'll take a hard look at fitting that in for the initial release.
Finally, a home button. If I'm knee deep in my cigars, and want to get back to my humidors/wishlist you currently have to back out. If you hit home, it takes me to the login screen, then if I click my cigars, I am back where I left.
Jon already answered that one. Just click the section button again to go to the "top" of that section. Just so you know, that works in other iPhone apps as well, and I just learned about it recently myself :)

Just a thought... why couldn't the app read any cigar with an unlisted quantity as 1,s o it could read 15 total cigars, 11 unique cigars? Seems like you could tell it default quantity is 1 or something like that.

How about a 3rd option, of Total wanted cigars?
5 Total Cigars
11 unique cigars
6 Wanted Cigars?
then from the wanted cigars screen, you could add a quantity to a humidor and it would be removed from the wanted list?
that button really means "edit list". It is pretty consistent with other iPhone apps in that regard. The challenge is allowing other editing without already having a cigar selected. Thoughts on behavior you'd like to see?
I guess my thought is it feels like an extra page, where the only option is the edit button, and the only option from edit is to delete the cigar. I'm kinda stuck on ideas for it, is this between screen needed?
Yes, this is something I want to do, but might be a version 1.1 feature.
Good idea, and probably pretty easy to implement. I'll take a hard look at fitting that in for the initial release.
Jon already answered that one. Just click the section button again to go to the "top" of that section. Just so you know, that works in other iPhone apps as well, and I just learned about it recently myself :)
I appreciate your great testing and feedback!!
It's been a pleasure! look forwarding to purchasing it from Apple when it's released!

Maybe in Version 2 :ss
Actually, I'll probably be dancing like that once this actually gets released on the app store. At a minimum, I'll be getting more sleep at night :)

could be the greatest thing ever :r
Just a thought... why couldn't the app read any cigar with an unlisted quantity as 1,s o it could read 15 total cigars, 11 unique cigars? Seems like you could tell it default quantity is 1 or something like that.
The way I've chosen to handle 0 quantity cigars is this (after consulting with Andrew, Lee and Jon during our wednesday HERF :)):
If you put a quantity of zero for something in your humidor (while adding or editing), it will not count toward the totals on the home screen. The theory is this: you can't put zero of something in your actual humidor, so you shouldn't expect this to show in the stats. Having said that, there is value in being able to do this, so you can essentially keep a history of cigars that you once had (notes, where you got them, rating, etc.).
Hopefully all of this becomes moot when I add a more robust 'Smoking Notes' section to the app in the next version. :)
Now I have to go make this change, so I can get this out the door!!!
Thought I would share the new numbers on the database. It now contains reference information for 1,700 unique cigars (718 CC's and 982 NC's).

Some of the key recent additions:
5 Vegas
601
A. Fuente
Ashton
Camacho
DPG
Graycliff
Gurkha
La Aroma de Cuba
La Aurora
La Flor Dominicana
Oliva
Padron
Perdomo
Rocky Patel
Tatuaje
Hopefully this helps to balance out the CC vs. NC focus of the app. There is still the ability for people to add any cigars they want, and edit the ones that are in there (I'm sure there are errors in the data; you'd be amazed at the amount of conflicting info about so many cigars). In any case, I expect it will be much more likely that people will find a good many of their own cigars in the database, so setting up the inventory part should be much easier for the user.
Who knew there were so many damn cigars ... 90 of them alone for Rocky Patel !!
Ok, back to work ... :)

Hell, the more cigars I put in the database, the larger my personal wish list grows!! In fact, mine currently stands at 1,637 (that's the total list minus the Gurkha's :ro :ro)
The Mobile Stogie application has been successfully submitted to Apple for posting to the app store!!!

The final version has minor tweaks from the beta 3 release, and has 1,741 cigars in the database.
Now comes the anxious waiting for Apple to review and hopefully approve the application. Indications are that this may take up to a week. If successful, then I'll post a new thread for the official version.
Thanks to everybody on CA who took the time to provide feedback, testing and moral support. This has been quite a journey for me over the past 3 months. In fact, as of Christmas 2008, I had never written a single line of C code in my life. Today I released a full featured application with hundreds (probably thousands) of lines of code. As I said, quite a journey. Regardless of the outcome, this is a very satisfying day for me. :tu
Thanks again!
Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope this thing pops out the other side! :tu
Great work Ken!
Congratulations on the submittal Ken. I know a lot of work went into this. You should be very proud. You did a lot of work to create something that you wanted to share. I was glad to be a part of it.

I just purchased 2 iPhones. Mine will definitely have this the second I see your post that it's approved and up. This has been the most interesting thread for me since the Silound Dog Rocket Review. Thanks so much for doing this and for giving us the insight into the madness that creating a program instills.
Almost 2 days of waiting, still shows "In Review" at the App Store. Damn I hate waiting :)

I believe it is either $3.99 or $4.99 if I remember what Ken told me before. I'm sure Ken will post soon. :D

Andrew is my agent here :)
The plan is $3.99. About the cost of a fairly pedestrian stogie :-)
Apple gets 30% of the sales for hosting and managing sales, so I don't expect to quit my day job. Sure would be nice to get a few cigars for my efforts though :ss

Ken, let us know as soon as you hear that it is live. Im going crazy waiting for this app. Cant wait. Maybe today.
Still "in review". I have a feeling today might be the day, based on feedback I've gotten from others who have submitted apps. Or, I'm just dreamin' :)

Thankfully I can still use the Beta! Unfortunately I loss everything once I put in the real version.
Ga! I'm getting ansy!
Imagine how I feel. Reading some posts on a dev site, I'm seeing some consistent data that suggests that 7 days is "the number", so maybe tomorrow is more likely. I need to take about a 48 hour nap so I can stop checking back to see if it's been approved. What really gets me going is people who report apps that take weeks, or even a month and a half to get reviewed.
Then again, 6% get rejected for one reason or another, so I'd better be careful what I wish for ;)

http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2009/03/26/iphone-app-store-30000-apps-but-slowing/
Above is an interesting read on the current state of the iTunes store and application approvals.
I liked the following list of top complaints:
- Delays in approval. Although Apple claims that 96% of apps submitted in February were approved — 98% within seven days — reports persist of apps languishing in the queue for months.
- Delayed payments. The waits for monthly payments have grown longer this year, on occasion violating the contract that says they must be paid within 45 days of the end of the month. See here.
- A punitive refund policy. As Techcrunch’s Leena Rao reports, developers get only 70% of each sale, but if a user demands a refund within 90 days, Apple makes the developer return 100% of the sale price.
- Failure to police the App Store. Several developers (three that we know of) are loudly complaining that clones of their original apps have been approved by Apple and are now being sold by copycats on the App Store. See here and here.
Status just changed to "Ready for Sale" !!!!!!!!!!!
:wo :wo :wo
I imagine it will take a few hours to actually show up on the store, but WOW!!!
Dammit, now I have to go to a couple more hours of meetings...
