I went from XP to Vista, and got this problem. It would work in my XP went to Vista, and it didn't work. I pulled the drive from one T-42 and put it in another one and it did the same thing. I have checked the firmware, and it is current.
Do I just have a fried drive?
I have Nero 8 installed on it.
It will burn CD's just not DVD's.
It shows up in my computer as a DVD RW drive.

maybe the software isn't updated enough to work on Vista for the DVD setting?

check the Nero website...see if they work well with Vista...other than that I'm just shooting from the hip.

Will it play DVDs?
I had a Lite ON drive go bad, it would play DVDs but not burn. Then it went completly bad, would not even play CDs. New Sony drive and everything works great now.
edit: Mine did the same, tray in and out with out warning. Sometimes it would read OK, then start reading and then open and close a couple times then kick it out and stay out.

That is what I'm thinking ... Nero 9 can be DLed for a 15 day trial. They limit a couple of things but seems more or less full version.
The Nero 9 trial version can be tested for 15 days starting from the date of installation.
AVCHD authoring and playback as well as MPEG-4 and BD-AV formats are not supported in the Nero 9 trial version.
But first make sure that Nero 8 is updated. There may be an option to update the software or drives supported.

I updated Nero last night, and it was a no go.
well I think it is toast. I pulled the drive, and tried it in another computer still no go.
Is this a bad price for a new drive (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=270300284297)?

The way I understand it I have to use IBM drives because of the firmware in them.
