$130 is ridiculous
Yep - probably why that bag has been listed for a few months.
The stuff shows up in the $30/ 8oz range from time to time. (Which by the way is what Canadians pay for a 2oz tin of any regular tobacco).
Keep your eyes skinned and stay tuned to the forum. If pops up here and there.

That's the whole thing isn't it? I think they are good tobaccos - the fun is finding them. Don't spend $130 though!

$130? Ouch! At $50 for an 8oz bag I balked, but bit because I haven't seen it in so long.
Last time I bought it, I got it for $22 for the 8 oz bag about 14 years ago. Last time I saw an 8oz bag available, it was for $26. I did not pull the trigger because I really didn't have the disposable cash to do it - now I wish I did. Oh well, considering I still have some that is 14 years old, and only pull it out for a special treat, I am sure this will last a while. In fact, I am guessing it will not get opened for some 10 years at least.
Peace of the Lord be with you.
My local B&M gets regular shipments and the retail price is $38 plus tax. Comes out to about $43 with sales and tobacco taxes per 8oz bag. I think the price on these is only going up.

43 is quite fair considering GLP 8oz tins are 32 at smoking pipes. I'd bite at that price easily.

I do not know that it is that rare because it disappears so quickly, or if it is so rare because the production of it has tailed off quite a bit? Or, because only so much is brought into the US? Or is it rare because of a combination of them?
Because production has trailed off, and only so much is brought into the US, when it does appear, people buy and hoard whatever is available.
Peace of the Lord be with you.

If you get it for a descent price and realize you don't like it I'm sure someone else on here would buy it from you. It's great that we all like different stuff. Every tobacco appeals to someone.

Decided to stop by George's since I was doing a couple things in downtown today. Walked in, grabbed a tin of Dunhill Flake and stepped in the humidor to see what he had interesting. Grabbed a couple sticks and was about to walk out the humidor and I just happened to look to the left of the door and lo and behold, 2 bags of Penzance. Grabbed one for myself and the other for a co-worker. Twas a good day.

The bowl is tapered, which allegedly allows for a folded flake to be stuffed in and burn easily without rubbing it out. So far my baby Dunhill bulldog handles flakes the best, and it isn't tapered.
I've had limited success so far, with the bowl getting nasty hot. Not sure if it is a lower quality briar, thin wall, or hot burning Virginia tobacco.
My quest continues.....

I can't take credit for the pipes, my lovely spouse purchased all of them for me.
The pipe stand was purchased at an antique store in Comfort, TX during my visit attending my brother's wedding. They had several different styles to choose from, I don't know how old it is, but it was well worth the $40, ditto again to my spouse, she wouldn't leave without it.

So a couple small items today. The rack was originally 75, then marked down to 50, I ended up getting it for 40 bucks, just needs a nice little rub down with Murphy Oil Soap...but then don't we all.
The Bull's Eye tobacco I got on a whim, I tried the Dunhill De Luxe Navy Roll and really enjoyed it, the guy at the shop said this would be more mild that that but I figured what the hell it's not that expensive.
They were out of folding stands so I asked if I could buy one of the ones in the cases that they were displaying pipes on, he couldn't find them in the system so he charged me 5 bucks :tu
The lighter, well I only have torch lighters at home so I wanted something more specialized for my pipes.
I might end up moving the pipe rack to the mantle.. sadly the mantle is painted white so we'll see.

I agree. Great way to pass the time and be with family or friends. About 6 years back or so, I was playing with my mom. Dad was sitting in the recliner reading a book. Front door to their place up in the mountains of Pauma Valley was open. Quite night, with only the coyotes howling in the distance. No electronics were on. Mom was laying out some cards, counting off, and then started moving her pegs, and that is when I caught her "cheating." I said, "Hold on a second sister Suzy. I think we miscounted a bit here," and I called the old lady out. "You just cheated on your son. I can't believe it." Mom started laughing so hard, I thought she was gonna pee in her panties. I turned to my Dad, who was just sitting there shaking his head, and I said, "can you believe that crap?" He said, "and now you know why I don't play cards with your mother buddy!":D

When I was little and we'd play gin rummy and if I begged she would play crazy eights with me, then one day she questioned how I made every right play and I told her I could see the cards in her glasses, that I could always see them. :lr after that she went out and bought the big bold faced cards with the giant letters and numbers and stopped wearing her reading glasses when we played :D Good times indeed.

So after reading Penzance this and Esoterica that, as well as reading how it's bigger on the internet (phrasing), I shot over to my local Tobacco shop because people said you will have better luck at a B&M. I headed over at lunch time and was looking through the tins, I didn't even see Esoterica (of any kind) on the shelves, then I literally look down right next to where my hand was and ... BAM!! So I bought the five they had. Also while not technically my first tin purchase, I did a sampler off P and S that they are obviously delivering via Panda bear, this is my first tin purchase in hand. :D

Ok so I was cruising around Pipes and Cigars and came across the build it yourself tin sampler, how could I resist, I was looking forward to trying a couple of the flakes and I liked what I've had from the Seattle Pipe Club so I grabbed that and a Twain Bent and Country Gentlemen Bent (after seeing posts about them here). I think that's it I can only use the birthday excuse 10 or 15 times :lr

I really don't know what I'm doing still. It's amazing how much better they look after reaming, salt treatment, and a little magic eraser. I've been hanging out on YouTube looking at restoration videos for techniques. They are quite helpful. Now I'm trying to figure out the best way to polish the wood without a buffer of some sort.

My wife let me pick up some tobacco myself for my coming birthday. No pic(s) yet as it is still wrapped, but just had to share. To boost my recently started pipesmoking hobby I got a "My own Blend" sample pack with 5 totally different blends so I can give some direction to which tobaccos/blends I favor most.
It was the only sample I could find around here and it contains very diverse blends:
Rijnstroom
Red Virginia with some black Cavendish, Perique and dark fired Kentucky. Also some Liqor 43 flavoring;
Red Feast
Burley plug, brown Cavendish (Burley and Virginia) blend with some light vanilla and chocolate casting;
Golden Blend
Ready rubbed flake blend from several Virginia and Burley tobaccos;
Smokin' Aces
Mild blend from several Virginia and Burley tobaccos with some caramel and chocolate casting;
Red Heat
English style ready rubbed flake blend from Louisiana Perique, Dark Fired Kentucky and Aged Virginia. Some black Cavendish, Oriënt and Latakia is also included.
Can't wait to try all of them so I can select some more blends, based on my opinion of this sample

Its good stuff. If your pipe sweetener doesn't work out for you, a pipe cleaner dipped in your favorite bourbon or whiskey works great in the shank and stem:tu

I got the sampler at my local tobacconist De oude leeuw (The old lion) (http://deoudeleeuw.nl/?p=producten&hcat=&scat=&md=det&prod=4018)
"My Own Blend" (http://www.hajenius.com/en/contact/news/28-my-own-blend-en) is a product of Scandinavian Tobacco Group (if I'm not mistaken) and is distributed in the Netherlands by Hajenius in Amsterdam. You can have your own blend made in their shop (and registered for future reference).
The sampler consists of the 5 non-personal (i.e. made by Hajenius) best sellers from the "My Own Blend" brand. Don't know if either shop delivers across the pond though

These were made to celebrate the Centennial of the Savinelli brand.
I picked these up on a pretty popular auction site in unsmoked mint condition!!
Apparently there were 6 pairs of special pipe shapes made to celebrate the 100th anniversary. These are style number 3.
Does anyone else have any more info on these or have any of the other styles?

you guys have excellent taste, I love these posts.
I'm currently waiting on 2 14 year old tins of Rattray's Accountants Mixture from pipestud. Also I scored a Big Ben ranger (the small pocket pipe shape) for super cheap. Oxidation on the small stem was really bad and I'd never gotten so strong of a burnt rubber smell while cleaning it up. Looks to be in fine shape, just high sulphur content in their stems I guess?

Oxidation on the small stem was really bad and I'd never gotten so strong of a burnt rubber smell while cleaning it up. Looks to be in fine shape, just high sulphur content in their stems I guess?
Pipestud has some good vintage blends on his site from time to time:tu

Well I officially have my 1st Pipe show checked of the to do list.
It was really nice. It's nice to be able to see the pipes up close and hold them in your hands. Wide range of pipes also from Savinelli to Meerschaum to absolutely stunning Artisan masterpieces as well as beautifully restored estates.
I met Rick Newcombe, the author of In Search of Pipe Dreams and bought a copy that he autographed for me. I told him I was fairly new to pipe smoking so he brought me over to the Lane tablenand recommended some samples of Medal of Valor and Crown.
Speaking of samples, I got a bunch of different ones from GL Pease Virginia Cream, C&D Straight Up English, John Cotton's 1, & 1&2, War Horse, Bengal Slices, Lane 1Q, and a few different Solani blends.
The reps from Savinelli, C&D, and Standard Tobacco Company were all very nice to talk with.
Here is the entire haul...

Stevieray, you'll have to let us known how that new C&D Small Batch smokes.
Seth, enjoy the new cob. Did you buy some filters for it, or are you gonna smoke it without?
I was recently down San Diego way attending a seminar, and I decided to stay over on Friday close by to do a mini herf with Adam (Adamjoshua) at Liberty Tobacco. Later before leaving, I perused their pipe tobacco area and found an aged tin of C&D Bailey's Front Porch sitting in there "git rid of" area. The cool thing about it was, the tin is from 12/2005, with the lid and bottom of the tin bulging outwards. So it had been sitting there for quite some time just fermenting. And, you can't go wrong with a $10 sticker price including tax, license, and drive it off the lot....:D

That's Pete's cob but I'm strictly no-filter in all my pipes. I'm considering trying out the savinelli's wood filters just out of curiosity though, the trick will be remembering to take it out after a smoke or two.

1.) I hate filters. My buddy Hektor makes these:
http://www.hwiebepipes.com/
Less gurgle for sure. Hektor is also an all-round decent kid who can use the cash if you are after something different....
2.) I love Black Shag - but in small doses in a rotation - the burning tires aroma can be a bit much if you are hitting it every day!

Nice tobacco's StevieRay. The new SM Beast release on April 29th I missed out on for the online retailers. Everybody was out by the time I finished procrastinating. However, I do know of a B&M in San Diego that had a dozen tin's sitting on the counter as of 05/04/2016. Just didn't feel like paying $14.95 a tin:D

Excellent pick-ups on 5/13 and today Steve. I took a slight advantage of the McClellands 10% myself from P&C.
Ordered the following tins: 3 McClellands Scottish Woods, 3 GLP Barbary Coast, and 3 C&D Oak Alley. From Pipestud, took home 3 100g tins of 2010/2011 Rattrays Old Gowie. From an order dated 05/10, awaiting 4 tins of SmokeHavens Our Best Blend (JF Germain & Son).

Thanks Steve. I'm sure he has one heck of a cellar in his hallway closet:D A majority of his offerings come from others that for some reason or another, want to move their own cellars. Mark - are those paint tin style jobbies form Peretti airtight?
Hello Neil, I would think so, but do not know the long term at this time. I just sent an email to Peretti' inquiring about "just how airtight are the 8oz tin's in regards to cellaring over a period of time."
I'll let you know once I have received a response back from them.
I don't know how long the tin's are sealed prior to a customer receiving one from Peretti' (i.e., are the tin's on the shelf for a period of time, or does Peretti' fill em' up per order?).
BTW, I just received two 4oz bricks of the Thanksgiving Day blend, and an 8oz tin of #8 Slice Flake from Peretti' last week:tu

That's good to know Warren. I would think a little "sealing wax" around the plug on top would help longevity too.

They did not Neil, which is a little frustrating. It was a very simple email request too.
For myself, I'm not really worried about it. On the two paint tins I have, I know once I open one of them, I'll work from the tin for a bit, and then transfer over Kerr or Mason jars until conclusion.

Opened up the first pint of my last pound and half of Peter Stokkebye Luxury Twist Flake, so ordered another 1/5 pound package.

In looking around, I realized I only had 1 quart jar with this in it, so I ordered another 8oz of Gawith & Hoggarth Bright CR Flake. (Yes, I do not smoke as much of this as the 2 previous.

Also got 4 oz of Gawith & Hoggarth's new Cherry Cream flake to test drive. First bowl was favorable, nice Virginias and the cherry/cream was nothing like the cloying stuff normally associated with cherry blends.

Interesting pulls on the Peretti tobaccos. Interesting because I do not know that I have ever tried any of their blends in the last 30+ years.
(time lapse to do some investigating...)
Ahh, I see now why. MacBaren blends bite me like a rabid dog, not sure why, but there is not a blend of their I tried that did not. And as I looked at Tobacco Reviews, I saw a few there that would be up my alley, but there were a couple that said they have to be treated with kid gloves of they'll bite. I now remember visiting the shop in Boston while I lived in Connecticut. I think I was warned, so I just avoided - or I may have sampled one while there, and decided to avoid further attempts.
