Can't wait to see your New pipe when you get it. I am sure it will be a awesome looking pipe. There are so many great pipe carvers out there. Wish i would have stayed in wood shop as a kid but no. I had them move me to Small Motors. Now I see where things could have been different LOL.

.

That is a very nice looking pipe for sure. I like the way the stem is made for it. I haven't seen one like that before. Congrats. The Sickness don't go away, You can put it in check for a little while. But with my little collection there are always more pipes I could buy.. and will. I like collecting them. I think they are Art. Best part is they can be smoked.

Awesome Pipe for sure

I've got a commissioned pipe on order and that will be my last pipe for a while, hopefully.

Is there a way for you to learn the origin of those 2 pipes? I like the bulldogs. It's a good size.

Its gonna be like pulling teeth Brian. The bulldog does not have any markings or stamps. The billiard has the capitol letter "B" stamped on one side of the stem, up near the tenon. Its a capitol "B" and not "b" and is simply a stamped letter, all black impression (i.e., there is no white within the stamped line).

I've looked-up a few different references, but nothing really hits the nail on the head, and it would only be speculation at this point.

I'll shoot a micro photo of the stem and post it here tomorrow for your review...

It is called PAD (Pipe Acquisition Disorder). Scratching the itch caused by it can also cause one to fall into an equally disabling TAD (Tobacco Acquisition Disorder).

Be careful.

Peace of the Lord be with you.

Crawford quoted me $375-$450 and required a $50 deposit for the billiard. I'm not sure why the $75 range? Perhaps it's hard to tell what the quality of the grain will be until you start cutting into the wood? I also think the high contrast stain I requested adds a bit more labor. He said the sandblasted ones are closer to $300 - $350.

It's actually pretty spendy for a newer pipe maker. It seems as though there are plenty of hand-made offerings in the sub $300 range. However, I specifically went to Crawford simply because he lives in my city and I want to support him. I also like the idea of having something hand-made specifically for me. It could be a family heirloom if I have kids some day. I don't plan on buying many more pipes this expensive, but who knows, if it smokes great maybe I'll send him more of my business.

Once I receive it I'll be sure to post some pics.

Here's a micro shot of the stem with the letter "B" for your review. It does appear to have had some "white" laid-in the stamped "B" at one point in time.

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg271/markinca1953/PipeStemMarking001_zps047f62ff.jpg

This particular stamp does not appear to be available for review in some of the websites with "marking" references. So, the search continues...

Only the billiard has the "B" on the left side of the stem. No other markings on the stem or the shank.

Bulldog appears to have no markings period...

Bristol or perhaps Doctor Boston? Possibly Benaderets, but that seems too bold compared to what you have.

Seems to be quite a mystery. I assume the owner had no info?

Not a Doctor Boston. i used to have one and you can't really make it out well iin the picture but the upper curved up and the lower curved down. Look at the pictures of Marks it looks like the upper is straight and the lower curves up a little. It has all the classic markings of a (Briarcraft) Smokemaster. Even the bottom of the pipe is cut like others I have seen only thing missing is the Stamp on the Briar and across the bottom where the nice cut flat spot would normally say Aged Imported Briar. (in a nice font) The only Smokemaster I have left is a bad example seeing it is a different age and class of Marks. Mine has an Orange Funny shaped diamond on the stem because mine is from the 30's before 1939 but after 34. Only thing I can say is that from looking at the Stem and pipe it calls out a Briarcraft company. They made many pipes like Airo, Cavalcade, Smokemaster and Sterling hall. I know that Smokemaster had on some of the Pipe a B a few Airo i came across did. It was a Second pipe (Basket Pipe) between 20 and 50's seeing Briarcraft closed down in 1950.

MarkinAZ

Nope. Gonna sell the billiard and bulldog once they have been cleaned, reamed, and polished. They've finished their salt/alcohol phase. The billiards tobacco chamber was reamed this morning, and I'm currently working on cleaning its draft hole and mortise on the shank. Alot of gunk in the mortise. Obviously, the prior owner(s) did not perform a regular maintenance in between smokes:rolleyes:

Aren't the same staff people working at P&C as before? If so, it would be nice to blame CI, but the problems would still be P&C's issues.

Bad hole drilled is a Peterson QC issue. Should P&C caught it? Possibly. Maybe you check such things regularly. But, if you get busy, can things get missed, especially if you do not expect such things from a company like Peterson?

P&C has been too good a company, for too long, to just write off.

In addition to Todd' comments, I myself have never had an order issue with P&C to date. However, if one ever does present itself, then a telephone call to the CS dept is in order to calmly resolve the issue. I've had a few issues in the past with other companies which were easily resolved over the telephone. So, moving along here...

It came out fairly good. The bowl received about four coats of Halcyon II (which had been recommended for sandblasted or rusticated type bowls). Around the third coat, I used my wifes hairdryer set to low heat which helped dissolve the Halcyon II and penetrate the briar. Applied quite a bit of elbow grease with a terry type cloth, and we be done. I can see where a buffing wheel or maybe a Dremel tool with a buffing wheel would come in handy in the future.

The only issue is a slightly loose stem. After cleaning the mortise and tenon, this apparently opened things up just a smidge. There is some resistance, but not enough to my satisfaction.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated on how to tighten-up the tenon /mortise issue. I hear that Beeswax is one way. Any others?

And yes, I know, I do have duct tape out in the garage, but...Ha!

Here is the Gresham Giant estate I recently got off of Ebay. Apparently these are made by Comoy. I believe it is the Smooth Apple model. Needs a little work although structurally it looks pretty good (in my noob opinion). I scraped out the bowl and it's getting a salt bath now. The stem also may need to be replaced. After the salt bath is it ready to go after you get all the salt out or is there another step to clean it out?

Pretty happy with what I'm seeing for $11.

Looks like a nice blast.

As for the loose stem, smoke it. When I have a loose stem, oftentimes just smoking a bowl will tighten up the stem. Hey, it is a very quick fix if it works. If you are afraid of it falling apart while smoking, a little scotch tape will hold it together till you are done.

If that doesn't work, then the beeswax is the next step.

Peace of the Lord be with you.

My apologies. The red colored "you"s above were meant to apply to P&C, not to "you." I was meaning that working in the store when stock comes in can often mean you get distracted from one task by an immediate customer or something - then you come back and maybe pipe gets missed. Or, you (P&C or any other Sales Co.) expect quality product, the day is busy, you just stock the shelf without really looking.

Hey, I remember getting a pipe from an online store. It was a higher end pipe from a well-known, reputable store. Got the pipe and a cleaner would not pass through the stem. As it was a straight pipe, I tried to look through the pipe, couldn't see light through it. When all was said and done, we determined that all the drill shavings were still stuck in the stem. Smoked great when I got them out, but it passed QC at the manufacturer and the store.

Peace of the Lord be with you.

That is awesome. Sounds like they are looking to take care of you. Just sad the problems to start with. But like been stated before others have had some drill shavings. In fact worse yet is one was a gift and when they person that got it as a gift went to smoke it They seen it didn't want to draw. Took the Stem out and found out that the pipe hadn't been drilled out. They said because it was a gift they took it and drilled it out and smokes great now :)

I am almost thinking that that pipe may have been a display to start with. Back in the day they would put blanks on display. They looked like the real deal but were not smoke-able. I don't know how long ago they stopped doing that because it was about 23 years ago when I wanted a pipe and the shop owner was like sorry i am out of that one right now. I said I will buy the display one. That was when he showed me that it was not a drilled pipe. May have been because it was in a High crime rate area too LOL. Or that was just the way it was I don't know.

Good to hear they are looking to take care of you. Maybe they will toss in some extra Tobacco for the trouble :)

It seems to be only their pipes. I've gotten other things I've ordered okay. I've noticed their stock numbers do not correspond to the items in their photos. I even described the pipe to the customer service rep, it didn't help. I found another pipe on another site that I really like, for less money. I think I'm gonna just ask for a refund and get that one.

It's about 5.5" long so not quite a nose warmer but the bowl is stout which makes it look shorter than it is.

The twin bore is supposed to cool the smoke more than a standard draft hole. I haven't gotten to smoke it yet, and I'm a little skeptical about whether or not the claim is quantifiable, but the draw is wide open, so that makes me happy. The twin bore pipes were discontinued about 5 years ago.

got a little Elephant & Castle Deerstalker from the mid 80's...

Great score on the E&C Wayne. Here's a little tidbit I re-conned from Pipesmagazine.com , regarding a response to aging:

"I think all of the blends you mentioned are naturally going to improve with age. But, man, I think you're really overworrying this. You're certainly not going to "lose" anything by storing any of these blends for the long-term. But I think there may be some skewed expectations regarding aging.

Yes, you'll see some subtle marrying of flavors after 3-10 years. But I honestly think you need to look much further down the road to see any kind of significant change. I've had a 30-year-old tin of Elephant & Castle's Deerstalker -- an all-VA blend -- that tasted exactly as it did when it was fresh. It wasn't any sweeter or richer or deeper in any way (assuming my palate, memory, and tasting notes were fairly accurate).

Which leads me to this: I'd just encourage you to cellar the blends you enjoy now, the untried blends that you think you're likely to enjoy (based on ingredients/blender), and then just let nature take its course. But I think you're just going to drive yourself crazy if you try to parse out whether African Virginias will do better than American Virginias, at what point latakia starts to fade, or whether a flake will age faster than a broken flake or a ribbon cut."

Enjoy:tu

Mark, I have talked with one of the guys behind this old blend and he has told me almost the same thing. Deerstalker has stayed good over the years while a few of the others have reached their prime and have gone downhill a bit.

I'll have a tin with me all three nights of Snowglobe if anyone can make it to South Lake Tahoe around New Year. @ Mark, I'll be sure to take some with me on my next trip to So. Cal.

Rob, I am geographically centered between two JR Cigar outlets. Unfortunate for my credit card. JR has proven to be my most dependable B&M for HTF cigars and pipe goodies. Both carry quite a unique selection now; much different than years back. They have most Padron, Illusione, Tats, LP, Fuente, etc. Every so often they get in JFGermain tobaccos too. I'm not sure if they inventory that stuff on their website as I don't ever check it.

The one in Selma has a few tins of Balkan Sobranie and one Margate left as of last week. The bulk bags of Esoterica went pretty quick though. The manager there told me they got in three bags. I bought the last one. If I see more I intend on picking them up and offering them here. Burlington was cleaned out of everything but Margate, though they advertised Stonhaven and Penzance on their in-store marquee...

No photos, but I scored some Esoterica Peacehaven; I got the last 2oz at Gold Leaf Tobacconist in Seabrook. It's the Margate with some aro topping. I haven't tried it yet, but I dying to. I also bought some more Barbary Coast. The proprietor told me that he used to stock all of the Esoterica line, but he couldn't move it, so he stopped buying so much. He did also say that he can special order pretty much anything. His prices are pretty decent; the 2oz of Peacehaven was only $14. Too much detail makes her suspicious. Ya see, I'm kinda anal retentive, so everything I have looks pretty new. I have a 24yo Pioneer stereo that looks like I took it out of the box yesterday. Oh well, how long can she stay mad? :sh

It's an Italian Viking and seriously, the fit and finish on this thing is excellent. I can't even feel the transition between the faux spigot and the stem or shank and a pipe cleaner goes through it very easily.

Comoys came in! Lovely grain too. Class act this pipe. I put in some of the new shipment Peter: St luxury Bulls Eye Flake. It looks like a bag of sliced pepperoni! :D First time I have gotten tobacco like this.

I cleaned the pipe with a pipe cleaner a little and shred up a pepperoni slice and just stuffed it in the bowl lightly. Didnt really know how to do this. It lit easily and the bowl smoked cool and stayed lit for me. Just lucky this time I guess!

I was told I would probably like this based on what I smoke and I do! Thanks for the hints Rev! I smoked blissfully for an hour plus and to me found this mixture to demand my smoking it slowly. Hot box it and it gets the back of your throat!

Well I smoked that sucker walking home in the snow. It was fantastic. Deep dark roasted espresso - mocha flavours. Developed a real meatiness to the end of the bowl. Cool luxurious, didn't go out. Reminded me a decent maduro cigar.

Tastes like more!

Some people have a hard time keeping Dark Star lit. If you can, it is a great tasting smoke. I find that if you can slow it down and just sip it, there are some deep, rich, sweet notes beyond description - sort of like a dark chocolate.

I find it helps if I dry it out till it's bone dry but I love it! It's definitely chewy. :dr

Thanks that's part of what prompted me to get it. The one was right it does smell kind of like ketchup. Lucky for me it tastes a whole lot better than it smells and I imagine when I let it dry out a little more it will be even better.

A few new buys this week.
First a craigslist find, 9 estate pipes and a 6 pipe rack for 30 bucks.
I salt bathed them all, and bleached the stems, not sure if this was a great idea? My first attempt at cleaning pipes. A few of the stems are all gray now, any help to get these looking better would be great.

Looks like you have a few pipes in your corral to smoke. That Falcon will give you a number of bowl options to choose from (not that I personally have one, but have seen a number of different optional bowls that are available):tu

I echo the same for Stonehaven. I picked one bag as a gift for someone else two years ago after I had a small separate sample, but haven't found one since. Heck, if someone found a bag locally, I'd be willing to buy it from them plus shipping.

Rich has a bag of Stonehaven at 4noggins in the consignment tins area. Premium price and then some!

Cup O Joes has had from time to time and Cigar-Cigar was our most recent source.

When it's available someone usually posts something on the forum, but it sells out awful quick.

Indeed. It's good but not $130 good. But, to each there own.

SP box arriving today, 4oz SotE, 2 tins FMC, 2oz LBF, and another MM Mizzou cob. I'll have to do a side by side pic of the new cob and it's 2 year old sibling.

$130? Ouch! At $50 for an 8oz bag I balked, but bit because I haven't seen it in so long.

Last time I bought it, I got it for $22 for the 8 oz bag about 14 years ago. Last time I saw an 8oz bag available, it was for $26. I did not pull the trigger because I really didn't have the disposable cash to do it - now I wish I did. Oh well, considering I still have some that is 14 years old, and only pull it out for a special treat, I am sure this will last a while. In fact, I am guessing it will not get opened for some 10 years at least.

Peace of the Lord be with you.
