My awesome wife got me this for valentines day, my 1st pear wood pipe and it looks like its going to be a great flake pipe with a deep and narrow chamber. The attention to detail is great, and I really like the funky anchor on it rather than a run of the mill "My 1st tattoo in the Navy anchor" lol!

I didn't purchase it, but my dad picked me up a nice little vest pocket pipe somewhere in his travels

http://oldchurchbbq.com/sharedpictures/Cigars/2013-03-11_All%20Star%20Vest%20Pipe.jpg

It says All-Star Ancient Briar and has a number, but I have not been able to find out much about it yet. Took a little bit of work cleaning it up and had to remove a plug in the stem, but it smokes pretty well now.

I'm looking foward to being able to stick it in one of the pockets in my fishing vest while on the water soon.

^^^Thats a great looking pipe Steve. I was looking myself regarding All-Star Ancient Briar without success. Although, there appears to be a couple of hits on ebay for closed auctions. My thought was (if Moo doesn't chime in) that you could shoot an email w/a couple of photo attachments to Jim Boswell for a response.

Other than that, the pipe appears to be carved in the Oom Paul style from the looks of it. Looks like an enjoyable pipe for stream or lake:tu

The only baccy that I've had before out of that lot are the Squadron Leader and the Irish Flake.

It's only 38 degrees and windy, so my dreams of having a bowl today of something new were put on hold.

It was hard to pass on the Syrian since it was less than $14 for a 3.5oz tin

First off I am blown away at the presentation and packaging of this purchase. After reading about the Boswells and seeing they are a family run business here in the USA I was hooked. I asked Jennifer over the phone for this pipe and some non aromatic Virgina to go along and they sent an extra ounce of Dan's bend plus pipe cleaners plus a pipe tool wrapped in pipe cleaners plus matches and a hand signed pouch for my pipe

The Boswell is really beautiful and I do not own a camera that does it justice. The stem is not black like it looks in the pics but a very dark brown with light brown streaks running through it.

Wonderful work on that pipe, just beautiful.

The Boswell's are truly a class act. When the family and I went on a trip last spring to Gettysburg I was fortunate enough to stop at Boswell's shop on the way back. I got to speak with Dan and J.M. and I was treated better than I have ever been treated by a retailer. I bought two pipes and a good selection of his tobaccos. He gave my Daughters cigar boxes to hold there things as presents. J.M. is just a true gentleman, and I continue to call the shop and order "Boswell's Best" aromatic tobacco, it is now my favorite.

If you ever get the opportunity, stop in and meet this family, they are top notch.

The Cricket is an interesting smoke, you either love it of hate - at least that's that way I see it.

I haven't had any in a while, but it was an interesting smoke. I was more into English blends when I got mine first tin. I had someone give me the rest of the tin because they didn't like the top note it was finished with. I smoked up the rest of that tin, and I've gone through another since then, but it has been a while, as I haven't been smoking either English blends or Aromatics lately.

Peace of the Lord be with you.

I like the cricket so far. I don't have enough experience to love it or hate it. It just IS for me currently. I see reviews that equate it to Hawaiian punch. I suppose some of the subtleties of pipe tobacco are lost on me. To date I've had: captain black about 10 years ago, pipe and cigars house burley cake and the cricket.

I loved the smell of the burley in the bag. In the pipe, not so much. I can't wait to try the Elizabethan

I'll probably post another query in the old farts thread soon. I'm still learning, but I can tell this is quite a different slope. No less steep, just different. :tu

And also with you.

I'm glad that I didn't hesitate, otherwise I'd be kicking myself square in the ass.

Keep looking, and if I happen to spy one, I'll let you know.

Not a big fan of burley either. Smells nice to me in the pouch, but not a fan of the taste. It is supposed to have nutty flavors and such, and is supposed to be what our ancestors on this continent smoked a ton of. OK, I personally do not like it. Virginias and VaPers (Virginia/Perique blends) are my favorites. I will still smoke an occasional Latakia blend, and an aromatic might make it into the rotation.

Oh, here is a biggie. I do not know if you have read or heard this before, but do not expect the volume of smoke that you get out of a cigar when you smoke your pipe. To get that much smoke, you will burn out pipes and fry your tongue.

The best way to explain the perfect burn is to sip pipe tobacco.

Another thing is that a pipe kept in the mouth will smoke better and stay burning longer than a pipe held in the hand, just the simple movement of air in the mouth helps the tobacco to smolder perfectly.

Thanks for the tips Rev. I've learned that an ash cap helps greatly, similar to how I like to smoke cigars...

The Virgina I smoked was sipped so slow it kept going out. Then when using your method of just keeping it in your mouth, it was much more productive... Thanks for all the info!

If you can find a place where there is a long time tobacconist who smokes a pipe, sitting with him and learning first hand will teach you tons. WHile you claim the difference was sipping -vs- sipping and keeping it in your mouth, it may have had to do with how you packed the different bowls too. Sipping is a learned art, it takes plenty of practice.

Keep trying new blends and practicing your technique.

Peace of the Lord be with you.

I originally had no plan of buying a pipe today, just was gonna stop in and look at some and pick up a new tin or two. As I'm looking George pulls this Nording down from the wall and hands it to me, and while I'm not normally a fan of a partially plateaux'd rim, I fell in love as the little bit of plateaux works perfectly as an index finger rest for my right hand. You know you have a (very good) problem when your local pipe shop owner can find the perfect pipe for you in just a couple tries. :r

Its good but very mild, little to no bite which is nice. Smells amazing in the tin thanks to the nice cubic inch of bourbon barrel they throw in there. I've only had a couple bowls of it so far, guess I'll have to light up another soon. And I haven't yet had the Frog Morton Cellar, I tend to stay away from anything with an added flavor, but I'm a sucker for bourbon and caved on the Stave Aged.

Nice pipe. Tinskys smoke very well.

No complaints thus far in the smoking department. I normally have a strong dislike of rusticated pipes, but this one was one of the few exceptions. I fell in love on first sight. The little bit of white acrylic or whatever it was he used takes the pipe from a good looking pipe to one of my favorites. Its funny how just the tiniest little things completely alter how we view things. Plus the bowl is nice and big which is perfect when you've got massive hands like me.

Funny how tastes are different too. I am not a big fan of accents on pipes - acrylic, bone, horn, silver, gold, anything. And while I like smooth pipes, I like rusticated better, and a crisp blast is my favorite.

The only one who needs to like your pipe, is you.

Not just because I purchased the tobacco from him, PipeStud has good reviews at TobaccoReviews.com. He does not put the drama into a review, just his honest straight forward opinion. I read his review after I made the purchase...had I seen it sooner, I would have made the purchase sooner. ;)

IMHO you should be happy with the Nightcap. Not too many people who don't like it.

The trick with buying tobacco from reading a review is finding a reviewer who has the same smoking tastes as yours and does not make biased reviews just because of the "hype" of a certain tobacco. If you find Pipestud's reviews, his a straight forward honest reviews.

Cleaned out Tobacconists of Cary of their Dorchester(3 tins) and grabbed tins of Dunhill Flake(already about killed the tin I grabbed not long ago), Wessex Brown Virginia Flake, Wessex Gold Brick, Wessex Campaign Dark Flake, and McClellands Blackwoods Flake. I won't be making too many purchases this year tobacco wise because I come to realize I have a LOT of tobacco sitting here waiting to burn in small, slow, fires. I did however get a box with 10 blocks of Algerian Briar that were cut in the 50's. They feel a bit heavier than the blocks I have purchased in the past.

I had sent the pipe to a pipe maker in Texas to blast. I DO make a pipe from time to time, but for what he charged compared to buying all the blasting equipment & learning how to do it, I was more than happy to pay for it to be done. I think it only cost me $20 then I had to re-stain it.

Picked up a 100g tin of OGS, 3 X 50g tins of D.E. Gatsby Luxury Flake, and 8oz of bulk blend your own from P&C.

Also picked up these pipes:

Unknown Calabash with flush mount cup.

Smoking pipes in Little River. They've always had what I wanted in stock. P&c was out of stock on the Louisiana flake for a while. Best part is that I ordered Sunday and it was on my porch Tuesday. Apparently I live close enough for free overnight shipping :r

I don't smoke a pipe too often, but I do like them. Picked up this large Rhodesian on eBay. A Wozniak hand made. It's huge - 6cm diameter handful. Really nicely made and presented complete with sock.

Thanks Mark, I'm looking forward to it. It has a condenser in it, and I haven't liked the way this works in my Kaywoodie, but it looks like it can be removed. BTW, I forgot I got this in the mail a couple of days ago:

http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/picture.php?albumid=542&pictureid=8574

I'm also waiting on an estate Commodore Canadian #202, but I'll take some pix when I've had a chance to clean it up and throw some wax on it.

I've been looking at GBD's since someone posted a real pretty one on here someplace.

It's funny, all it took was one piece of advice to make it easier for me to enjoy pipes. I forget who wrote it but it was: "Don't be afraid of re-lighting". Now I'm not struggling to keep it lit and therefore it's not over heating. That easy! :r

Same here, and dry tobacco. It's insane how good it tastes when it isn't a fiery inferno :)

My zippo butane insert came DOA, so I need to return it. I decided to give the fluid one a try again... I still taste the fluid, but I can't taste it down through the entire bowl like I did at first. I'm not sure if this is because my taste is muted due to allergies, or if it's because the wick needed to burn down some. For now it seems a little better. If I can limit the taste to only when I'm lighting, I think I can live with that for the ease and convenience of using a zippo. I have a lotus brand lighter that has a dual soft flame torch, but it has the smallest tank of any lighter I've ever used. It runs out of gas after about 15 lights, which isn't much considering how often I have to relight.

Here is my new Peterson 307:

How many bowls do you smoke per day?

I smoke anywhere from 8 to 10 bowls a day. It has been around for many years. I hadn't started smoking other blends until the last 6 or so years. before that it was only PA and CB white, every now and again I would smoke some Velvet and then a few times a month I would buy a few blends to try from Tobacco stores that they would have in Jars and you would buy by the Oz. How ever I moved away from all the cool B&M and started to buy offline. In bulk I have about 4lbs of tobacco and Tin Tobaccos I have just under 1lb. In the last couple of years I have started to buy and try other OTC to try.

Sorry got off topic anyway PA is a good straight tobacco. One that I and many others use to break in a pipe and one day I will find Carter Hall and start smoking that again... Fun days

The Charatan was cleaned and stored away about 20yrs ago. It will receive a proper cleaning and polish.
