Those look great! I've been thinking of getting the Peterson Tanker...

Now is the time! They have a deal right now where you get a free tin of peterson tobacco with any pipe purchase so it makes it a no brainer on a cheaper pipe like the tanker.

It is an official peterson promotion. If your local shop is not doing it, www.smokingpipes.com is.

Got all the stuff I need to start I think

The pipe is a Missouri Meerschaum, don't know which one, but its the only one my B&M had, and since I buy cigars from them all the time, they cut me a great deal for 2 oz of their most popular blend

I already smoked 2 bowls, and I'm getting better, I kept the 2nd bowl lit the whole time, but by the time I got good with the matches, I was down to 1 :r I am not used to the way pipe tobacco tastes, I know this is only one type, but I'm used to the mouth full of strongly flavored smoke like you get with cigars.

This is a very interesting hobby, I'll definately be buying a decent quality pipe one I get good with the corn cob, not that its a bad pipe, I just need more pipe than one since my bowls are only lasting me 20 minutes or so. I'm also looking to try the flake type of tobacco I think is what it is, since it looks like it would be much easier since its not all loose and stuff.

I found a few retailers online with some left in stock.

Not worth it to me to be honest. Between the retail mark up on tobacco and the states horseshit taxes, I buy all of my tobacco online. I do buy pipes at the B&M. Made the mistake a few times buying pipes on looks and not feel.

Today I ordered my first batch of Pipe Tobacco that isn't the cheapest Black Cav around or blends by local stores. A local pipe maker passed a friend of mine a blend of Latakia, Orientals, and Virginians (Butera's Royal Vintage Latakia #2) and I loved it, so I decided to go ahead and get on into good pipe tobacco. About time. The first three of these were suggested to me personally by people on this forum, so thank you.

4 oz of Cornell & Diehl "Haunted Bookshop"
4 oz of Hearth & Home Anniversary Kake
1 Tin of Dunhill Early Morning Pipe
1 Tin of Seattle Pipe Club Seattle Evening

Now I will eagerly check the mail every day, waiting with ready pipe for the day that my new Pipe Tobacco arrives.

I bought these...

All three for under $60.00 off of eBay. All unsmoked, new old stock.
The top is a unmarked cob with a filter in the stem??
The middle is a Brigham #329, but the web site shows a smooth finish, mine is older??
The bottom is a Missouri Meerschaum.
I'll use the cobs at work, that way I won't be too upset if they get screwed up.
The Brigham will get burned in as soon as it stops raining...

So how did I do??

Here are my first two pipes. I found them at an antique store last weekend and they were both $7 so I figured why not. One is a Falcon, and the other is an Amphora Briar...neither of which I know nothing about, but they looked to be in good shape :noon:noon

Thats a good buy on the Falcon, I would buy one for $7.00, on ebay they usually go for 3 or 4 times the $7.00 you paid. Never owned or smoked one but I would like to get one someday to try. You can get different bowls for the Falcon.

I don't know much about the Amphora.

The Cigar is the shoppe connected to P& C custom blend.Bag on left is a 1 lb misc blend from p&c called Best of rest
Bag on right is PS Norwegian. My plans on that is for mixing or by self my next purchases are bulk perique latakia and maybe some bulks from C &D in their blending section. Kinda building back up my stock to play with blending again. am trying to step away from PS or other companies that have that bite . I found it in WO larsens stuff too, makes it hard to blend then gift an old smoker or sensitive smoker. But am at the point where I like companies stuff but want to play . I saw c&d had bulk chopped madurro but after figuring what I want to mix found its already in their Purple Cow.

First off I am blown away at the presentation and packaging of this purchase. After reading about the Boswells and seeing they are a family run business here in the USA I was hooked. I asked Jennifer over the phone for this pipe and some non aromatic Virgina to go along and they sent an extra ounce of Dan's bend plus pipe cleaners plus a pipe tool wrapped in pipe cleaners plus matches and a hand signed pouch for my pipe

The Boswell is really beautiful and I do not own a camera that does it justice. The stem is not black like it looks in the pics but a very dark brown with light brown streaks running through it.

THAT, is a beautiful looking pipe you have there Jake! The Boswells are simply a spot-on family. I've always had a positive interface everytime that I've called their store.

Your pipe is the deep fluted freehand (pic #3) under their "pipes for sale." The bowl must feel just right in your hand.

I rec'vd the same 3 in 1 pipe tool as well. Its quite a versitile tool. I guess I was so excited when my poker arrived that I didn't even notice the signature on the pipe bag that it arrived in. I had to go back in the bedroom and check it out, and there was the signature. Cool stuff! I think its the simple stuff like their customer service and quality product that keeps me coming back.

That Dan's Blend is some good baccy too. Beautiful pipe Jake and hope you get many years of enjoyment from it:tu

Go ahead and shoot Gail an email saying you perused the Fishing Vest pipes, and was wondering if Dan or Jim are still making them, and if so, what would be a price range nowaday.

She's great and it doesn't cost you a thing (for now that is:D)...

Always funny how being in the mood for a pipe comes and goes with the season. Had a couple days of cooler weather 2 weeks ago and thought to myself a warm briar in hand would be nice. Then it warmed up and I forgot about that thought until today, when we didn't even crack 60 and was beginning to think more about what my first bowl in a few months will be. Then I see this thread, and now I'm debating on calling up Boswells to see if they have any new churchwardens being made. :r

Boswells had a couple of Churchwardens up for sale last week on their web page:

http://www.boswellpipes.com/images/Churchwarden4_001.JPG

http://www.boswellpipes.com/images/WSChurchwarden5_001.JPG

Both are very nice looking pipes, and the bowl heights on each are just a smidge over 2" each...

If you ever get the chance to stop into Boswell's shop it is absolutely worth it. I went out of my way to stop in on a trip across PA, smoked a couple bowls of JM's complementary tobacco bought 2 pipes, and even had some custom work done on one of the pipes while I waited.

There were probably 80 pipes for sale in the store, and the prices were better than what is listed on the internet, and still included all the extras.

If your interested in a churchwarden I had Dan make one for one of the pipes I was buying so it's convertible.

Thanks. I thought I had posted these before, but maybe not. I'm glad that I bought the extra stem. I'd wanted a churchwarden, but didn't want to be completely committed to only having the long stem. I had thought about having a churchwarden stem made for my Green 999 Spigot, but when this opportunity presented it's self it was too good to pass up. Boswell's does not hand cut their churchwarden stems, but instead use and modify pre fab stems. This keeps the cost low, but if that's not what you are looking for you may want to pass. The only difference it really makes it that the stem is very thin, which makes it light, but also if you try to clench it can be pretty unsteady.

Ah, that can be a deal breaker for me. I clench for about 90% of each bowl I smoke, so if it doesn't hang right I end up smoking the pipe significantly less

Commander Quan
10-08-2012, 02:05 PM
If that's the case, you probably won't be happy with any churchwarden unless it's something with almost a full bend that you can let hang from your mouth. There's just too much leverage placed on the jaw to be comfortable otherwise.

I'm a clencher as well, which was my primary reason for not wanting a standalone churchwarden. The Hans Christian Anderson line is another option for a pipe with 2 stems.

Awesome, I see that it is from a "2008" crop but I'm not really sure if that means it's ready to smoke.

I popped the tin of Dark Star since it has a 2009 date on it and rubbed the whole thing out and transferred to a mason jar. As I was doing it my Daughter asked "Who farted?":r Guess it does have a different smell. Looking forward to letting it dry and firing it up in a few days.
