Folding Bicycle Question

I am on a long-term gig in NYC and am thinking of getting a folding bike to get a little more exercise. Any suggestions. I have read a lot and Dahon looks like the smart choice but I am trying to keep this on the cheap side. As for use, mostly short rides (a few blocks) and to and from work (about 1.5 miles) with the bike lock not being an issue since I already have one.

You can make any bike a folding bike if you install couplers on an old bike. The make the area where the frame is cut even stronger than before. I think Independent Fabrications, among other offer this. Many local frame builders can do this to an existing bicycle.
