Greetings. I am new, although I have smoked cigars off and on with friends throughout the years. I have decided to take the dive. Just bought a 400ct humidor and beads from heartfelt. I am going to make my first purchase of 5ers today. Here is what I have in my cart but I wanted to get some feedback first before I committed.

1x $26.85 - Montecristo White Rothschilde 5 Pack
1x FREE - Oliva Serie G Double Robusto 5 Pack
1x FREE - Oliva Serie G Maduro Perfecto 5 Pack
1x $31.50 - Padron 6000 5 Pack
1x $21.99 - Perdomo Lot 23 Churchill 5 Pack
1x $33.99 - Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 Toro 5 Pack
1x $22.99 - Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 Petit Corona 5 Pack
1x $31.99 - Romeo Y Julieta Aniversario Robusto 5 Pack

My first 40 cigars. Does this look good? Any suggestions? Thanks a lot and I look forward to getting to know you all and your cigars :ss

You have a nice variety of cigars there. Most are quite good imo :tu

Some very nice choices in their. I personally am a big fan of the RP vintage series, and the padron maduros. Plus those oliva serie G's that you are getting free are very very good sticks!

A good selection for a first purchase. I have bought multiples of all those cigars at some point in my cigar smoking career. As for the prices, I can't be specific since I haven't bought any of those brands in some time but it looks okay to me after a cursory glance.

You might want to consider the Perdomo Slow-Aged Lot 826 as an alternative to the 23s. Not that the 23s are bad, I just think the 826s are a great smoke.

One thing I thought about was switching one of the RP Vintage to RP Sungrown. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Will it give me more variety?

The Vintage 90 and 92 are similar, yeah.

Personally I would stick with the both of the Vintage. I don't think the Sungrown is very good at all.

If you do swap one, would swap out the 90 Toro's. If you are wanting to try some more RP, go with the Edge Corojo and the Decade, both of those are a much better smoke than the Sungrown.

You can't go wrong with either one but I would go with the 90 because I like the toros.

See, here's the thing. I prefer the 90 over the 92. :r
But neither of us knows your tastes, so you might prefer one or the other, or hate both of them.
If you're going to swap one out, I'd try something from a different brand for more variety, like 5 Vegas or CAO. Or find a theme-based 5er, like all maduro, or all toro size.

I wanna get some olivia's for free. :D

You might want to get a 5'er of the Don Pepin Garcia Serie JJ Maduros. They are awesome! :D

gnukfu
02-19-2009, 01:14 PM
I would suggest taking out the 1990s since you are getting the 92s and see if you can get some Fuente 8-5-8 maduros for the same price or cheaper...or Don Pepin Garcia blue labels.

I'd keep everything on your list AND try to pick up what some others here have suggested. It's a steep slope my friend and the only way to reach bottom is head first and 90MPH. :r:r

Enjoy the ride!

P.s.
Joking aside you've made some great first choices and the ones you don't pick up this go round will give you something to look forward to on the next purchase.

OK...I am switching the 90s for CAO Cx2 Toro 5 Pack $28.99. This will give me one more brand to try. And don't worry everyone...this is just the first step in my endeavor. I am checking cigarbid right as we speak. Thanks for everyone's input. I truly appreciate it.

Oh to be young again! Take your time and find out what you like and don't like. That looks like a great selection to start with.
I second the recommendation that you pick up some Fuente 898, if not now, later. It's a great smoke that won't kill you and it's a good frame of reference for your taste and future suggestions.
Never, never let yourself be persuaded into liking something that you don't. If the whole world says they like Don Dingleberries and you don't, don't be afraid to say so.
It's all about what you like.
Most of all, enjoy! And welcome to the slippery slope!:ss

You have a great selection of smokes there. The Lot 23's are good but I tend toward the Lot 23 maduros. I love the Vintage 1990's and the Oliva G Maduros. You can't go wrong with some Padrons in the box either.

Happy smoking.

Very nice. I'm not much further down the slope. I started a little over a month ago with a 100 ct, and I may be upgrading soon. :r
Once you get your smokes, check out the PIF and other trading threads. It's a good way to get to try out some other smokes, especially boutique cigars that you may not find on your own.

IT IS DONE! My first order has been made. I am now working on putting together a wish list to try to get some good deals on cbid. So far I have the AF 898. If anyone else has some must have suggestions I would be happy to hear them. To those of you that already made suggestions I thank you! I hope to be making suggestions to others soon. I cannot wait for my humidor to get here so I can season it, and start filling it up.

Thanks for the welcome!

By my count you've only ordered 40 cigars. They are going to get awful lonely in that 400 ct. humidor. You should sample what you've ordered and then buy boxes before SChip kicks in.

Everything has shipped. I have already received the RH beads. The sticks should come in on Monday. I have been working some crazy hours which should end on Tuesday...if this is the case I am going to pick up a few sticks from my B&M and enjoy them with some sweet Kentucky bourbon.

How long would you all recommend the sticks that I ordered sit in the humi before I think about smoking them? :dr

You probably want to let them rest for a week or two, but I always like to try one or two right off the truck (OTT). Is your humi already seasoned?

No I am working on it right now. I am hoping it is good by the time the sticks come in. If not I was thinking I could get most of them in some tupperware just until the humi is good to go!

I cant wait!

A newbie should just try every smoke that comes his way.
Plenty of time to get a second order together.

You can probably get in on a Newbie Sampler Trade(NST)
with a FOG. FOGs are very generous with smokes, and
NSTs are notoriously one sided, in favor of the newbie.

Look for NSTs on this and other cigar boards like CigarPass.com
or eHerf.com, etc. CA probably has them here, too.

My Priority package didn't get to you yet? 3 1/2 days?

You should have had them today, at the latest. Maybe tomorrow.
Hope they didn't 'inspect' the package. Not sure that the USPS likes
cigars in the mail. Never had a problem b4, though.

Maybe I'll check the DC for progress.
