Do you consciously exhale through your nose?

I don't know how to. Also, the few times I accidentally did it, it hurt.

Sometimes. Seems all I pick up is pepper.

I will usually try at least once or twice on each cigar, but I don't do it frequently or the majority of the time. Sometimes the cigar is too harsh for me so I try it once, let the eyes water and try to remember not to do it again.

I do all sorts of stuff with the smoke...French inhale, nose exhale, roll the smoke around in my mouth. I also do this thing, I will try to explain it: while nose exhaling, I "open and close" my jaw, with my mouth still closed. Kinda like... smacking your lips with your mouth closed? :D

All the time.
Probably half or more of my exhales are out the nose,
at least in part. And much of my mouth exhales are
done as a "French inhale", also.
It's the only way to truly taste your smoke in its entirety.
You folks who don't do this are missing most of the flavor.
...
You DO mean when we're smoking, & not all the time, right?:ss

02-17-2009, 12:29 PM
Absolutely. I find myself having to make sure I don't just nose exhale on occasion. I won't nose the initial blast though, NC or CC.

I thought I was the only person to "French inhale"! I find it easier on the palate than a complete nose exhale. I definately get more flavor out of a cigar when I do either

Do you consciously exhale through your nose?
Since I don't intentionally inhale cigar smoke, I guess not. The few times I've inhaled cigar smoke, even my own passive smoke, it gags me badly. I've always heard that cigar smoke is high in alkalinity and very harsh. Add he fact that I have emphysema and have had my right upper lung lobe removed, it's probably not a good idea for me, but to each their own.
But I do pass smoke from my mouth out through my nose (snorking?), so I guess yes? Then, if it burns, I quit or do it a lot less frequently. With milder cigars, I tend to do this quite a bit.

always with Davi's.. the other stuff I've lost a taste for. :(
Almost always. I think that I did it unconsciously at first because of many years of cigarette smoking. It definitely seems to add to the enjoyment of the cigar.

I can't, I have a Haller cell in my right sinus and if I exhale through my nose the smoke just stays up there and burns like crazy for days.

After I learned how to nose exhale I do it on almost every draw. However, some of the stronger NCs (e.g. JdN antano) I find it more difficult (read painful) so I only do it every so often.

It's pretty easy.
WIthout a cigar...
1. Close your mouth tight and breathe in and out of your nose.
after a few times...
2. Open your jaw as far as it will go without seperating/opening your lips and keep inhaleing and exhaling through your nose.
after a few times....
3. add to the above puffing out your cheeks as far as you can without breaking the seal of your lips. Holding air in your mouth like a balloon. If you do it well you can create/feel the pressure on your cheeks independent of breathing in and out of your nose.
after a few times....
4. Take a full nasal inhale independent of but with your cheeks nice and full of air. On the exhale concentrate closing your jaw tight, defalating your cheeks and minimizing the airspace left in your mouth. Think about using your tongue to force the air up and back it might help.
If you got your cheeks to deflate and your mouth to close up without leaking any air through your lips.. you just did a nasal exhale. The air that was pressurizing your cheeks had to go somewhere. :) The key at first is to make sure your lungs are full so that you have the airway moving. After a bit of practice you can get the air/smoke out of your mouth thru your nose starting with empty lungs.

You don't have to inhale into the lungs to exhale out through the nose. Read the smoking technique thread. I finally got the technique down and it's like I never smoked cigars before...well worth the practice.

I nose exhale to some degree on everything I smoke, regardless of which of the various islands it may originate from. Different tobaccos have different profiles, and an exhale through the nose is important for me to get a handle on those nuances.
Of course once in a while, just one nose exhale is sufficient to completely wither ones nasal hairs. It took me almost a month to recover from a manly nose exhale of a LFD Maduro Chisel. :D

I usuially nose exhale every few puffs. If a cigar is stronger than I would prefer to nose exhale I blow out half the smoke, refill my mouth and then nose exhale.

After taking some smoke into your mouth you can go through the motion of saying "caw" with you lips closed while exhaling through your nose and that might get you snorking.
I used to be a cigarette smoker so it came naturally to me.

I honestly didn't think a person could smoke a cigar and other way, this thread has really enlightened me.
The sweet spicy taste and smell in my nose is why I like smoking cigars.
When there's no wind I like to french inhale because it tastes different going up my nose than out my nose. I don't know why, you wouldn't think it'd be different, but it is.
I picked up the habit of smoking like that from when I was a kid and smoked menthols. I loved the menthol sinus flavor but could never make a habit of smoking cigs cause it cut my wind and I liked to play ball. Running out of breath halfway up the court or halfway to first base never settled well with me.

Even though it can enhance the smoking experience, I try not to because I usually end up with a sinus infection.

CCs are made for snorking, but I do so with my NCs all the time.
It is my belief that all cigars are made to be smoked how the owner of the cigar pleases regardless of where the tobacco was grown. Just because tobacco was grown on one island versus another doesn't mean it should be smoked differently. That is an argument that makes no sense.
And I'm not directing this at you Andy. Your post just summed up what I think Klugs was looking for.

After reading everyone's different experiences, it makes me wonder if I didn't burn my brains out a long time ago. I never noticed a real difference in the intensity of the sensation from one cigar to another. Each is unique in it's own way. I just assumed everyone passed smoke thru their nose.

It is my belief that forks are made to be used however the owner pleases, but it can be argued that they're intended to be pushed into food so that it can be delivered to said owner's mouth.
Call it tradition. :)
Goes the same with cigars. Tradition hopes that we'll smoke cigars in a fashion that we can appreciate them at the level that the devoted and inspired maker intended.
It has nothing to do with good or bad, wrong or right.

Before last years shak I didn't nose smoke. And tho I'd made a concious decision to move heavily into CCs I still smoked and loved an occasional NC. Then I learned to smoke and some curious things happened:
1. I saw the flavor of a lot of cigars, or rather what I thought was the flavor, be tremendously expanded.
2. I later found cigars that I thought were great were actually not so great.
3. I also later found the inverse to be true, lots of cigars I didnt appreciate as much became real stars via snorking.
I might not phrase it that CCs were made for snorking, but it does allow the smoker to really see what people mean when they talk about the depth and complexity that CCs offer over NCs. If you don't snork, I don't know that you'll ever really see this.

I have always found a lot more depth, flavor and complexity out of nc's, as a whole. By a longshot.
I'd be willing to concede that cc's deliver more "complex subtleties" than nc's, as a generalization.
Mind ya, this is just how I feel, but I find cc's as a mild alternative to a good cigar. I don't mean this disparagingly at all. I enjoy a number of cc's now. I smoke them when I'm not in the mood for a cigar. :)
I smoke strong, sweet, spicy maduro nc's mainly.
To put it in perspective, I feel like those nc's are a big steak dinner and cc's are a salad. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a salad, ya know?
I find all my cc's so similar that if I was forced to only smoke them, I'd probably quit smoking from boredom. There's not the vast difference between a nic puro and dominican puro. I enjoy that big difference, the big range.
Ultimately I think it's awesome that there's so many different origins, and so many different blends. It's what gives the whole hobby spice.
One last thing and I'll shut up...
Nose a two year old JJ Maduro and there's an absolute mind-blowing richness, huge range and complexity at a 10 on the Richter scale.
Nose a 10 year old ERDM Lunch Club and it's like going to the ballet. With a dress on.
It's whatever you're in the mood for, baby. :tu

You just meter how much you accept up your nose.
If I'm getting too much I just turn my head. I release it from my mouth very slowly, kind of by just closing my mouth real slow.
I'm sure I look ridiculous, but it's a whole 'nother sensory experience.
It's especially fun with flavored cigars because they taste totally different snorked, mouthed or french inhaled.
Add to that smelling the raw smoke off the end of the cigar and smelling the drawn smoke that wafts out of the back of the cigar after a drag, and I get five very different experiences from the smoke.
Six if you count the smoke burning my eyes, I suppose. :D

Did ya ever notice that the burning end is sometimes really nasty but the smoked end is always nice? It's interesting to me how much stuff gets filtered out by pulling the smoke through the cigar.
I notice if I take a haul and hold the cigar with the tip angling down that the smoke in the cigar will sometimes weep out real slow so I can get a nice long "look". :)
I have to be real careful smelling the burning end cause that smoke is usually very strong and burns my eyes.

I chew my cigars like they're scrap chewing tobacco. I get so gross sometimes that the slobber runs down the cigar and puts it out. :D
I've been making a conscious effort to "clean it up" when I'm smoking with other people so that I can share and try their cigar. When I get it wet I roll the cigar on my pantsleg to dry it up.
I'm still not very good at it. :r

NC or not - roughly 80 to 90% of everything I smoke gets exhaled through the nose. Possibly because my taste buds are fried - :ss

Do it with my cigarettes too.. people think I'm angry!

:tu
Truly goes to show that it is all in the eyes of the beholder. I could have written the exact some post (well ok slightly different but the same gist) about me and CC's
I fully respect your position and opinion on this Scott.

i find most NC stuff to harsh to do it all the time. i do it about 30%. also if i am smokn one i am not trying to give it a lot of love. CCs on the other hand i do it about 75% of the time.
I have been trying to do this for weeks now but I cant figure it out. So far I just end up choking and wanna pass out everytime I try it.
I am gonna try Daves list and see what happens.

I try this at least once or twice with every cigar I smoke--it's a little bit of work cuz I'm snorking-impaired, but if it's pleasant and tasty, I do it more. If it makes my eyes water, I quit.
Oh, and after 10-15 years of smoking cigars, I blew my very first smoke ring the other day. Completely by accident and couldn't do it again if I tried. Yeah me.

We've had this conversation before, Dave! I can't help but exhale out of my nose. It's not possible for me to smoke a cigar without doing it. :ss
Oppps...just saw this thread is pointed at the NC smokers :tpd:

You and me, both. I never understood how some folks can't do it. I can't not do it.

Me before snorking:
NC's - Good!
CC's - Bad!
Me after snorking:
NC's - Bad!
CC's - Good!

When I first started smoking I had a hard time trying to exhale smoke thru my nose, now it doesn't matter if it's a NC or CC I do it with everything. Now that I started doing this I've finally started to taste my cigars.:ss
