THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

BELLEFONTAINE, Ohio -- It was a delicate conversation, to be sure: the school principal telling a class of fourth-graders this morning that their teacher is absent because she was arrested yesterday at the local Super 8 Motel.

There was little, if any, discussion about how 35-year-old Amber Carter had apparently gone to the hotel to be paid for sex. Carter had taken a half-day of sick leave yesterday, said Bellefontaine City Schools Superintendent Larry Anderson.

Not long after she left the school, sheriff's deputies, following a tip, arrested Carter at 12:05 p.m. in the hotel parking lot.

She was charged with prostitution, a third-degree misdemeanor, and unauthorized use of property, a felony. Anderson said the felony charge stems from the fact that she may have used her school computer to set up inappropriate meetings.

The school district is cooperating in the investigation, he said. Anderson placed Carter on paid administrative leave last night.

Carter was processed at the Logan County Jail and then released.

A substitute assumed her class at Western Intermediate School today, and the guidance counselor and the principal met with the students to answer any questions they might have had.

"It's just a bad situation," Anderson said. "It's not our place to tell them too much, but we figured the students might have heard rumors and would have some questions."

A letter will go home to parents tonight.

Carter has taught in the Logan County district for 13 years and hasn't had a single disciplinary problem, he said. She's been a popular teacher.

No one answered the phone at Carter's Bellefontaine home this morning.

Logan County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Randy Dodds said he couldn't provide any more details on the case.

I was going to say that. I am a teacher. With all the budget cuts and stress of being pink slipped every year, it does not take a genius to see how she was driven to this.

Though, I must say, being a male prostitute is low down on my list of summer income opportunities.

Haha, I wonder if the news agency realizes the irony of that statement.

Headline should read "Teacher popular among students and staff arrested on prostitution charges".

Hang in there Tyler...I was going to be a teacher once; it was really tough for me to justify it out here in L.A. I admire you though; they really need to take better care of you folks.

I honestly do not see a problem with it. Using classroom computers to set up liasons would be a huge no-no and might even be grounds for disclipinary actions, but as long as the two careers the teacher worked never crossed paths, I dont see what the huge issue here is.

Sure. She can also be running guns to Nicaragua or selling heroin on the street corner. As long as the paths don't cross, it's all good.

It would be in most unions contracts. Falls under a similar line of using the school computer for any illegal activity.

While Peter's response sounds tongue and cheek, the fine line between what is appropriate and isnt for a teacher is a good point.

I am not allowed to smoke pipe at school (obviously), but if I am around town smoking and one of my students see me, is that grounds for discipline? I don't think so (and I think the district would have a real hard time doing anything like that). However, if I am busted on my own time for meth use or something like that, it is a different story.

Item four of the NEA (National Education Association, one of the two main national organizations for teachers_ Code of Professional Ethics states:

[The teacher...] Shall make reasonable effort to protect the student from conditions harmful to learning or to health and safety.

Being a methamphetamine addict would likely pose a risk to health and safety. Engaging in prostitution could be argued to as well.

In particular, I work at a day treatment with students with severe behavior disorders. Many of the students have also been sexually abused or perpetrated sexual offenses themselves. Having a prostitute teaching them would probably not be the best idea. :hm

Anyway, interesting story. I am particularly curious if this was her first time. The new article says her record was clean till now.

My point wasn't meant to be so subtle. I was illustrating the fact that running guns and dealing heroin are illegal. Just as prostitution is. I wouldn't classify any of them as "careers". And I certainly have issues with an elementary school teacher engaging in these activities.

As you pointed out, certain professions also have standards of ethics. School teachers certainly have an ethical responsibility considering the impact they have on educating our children.

The way I see it is, there is no crime there.

She took half a sick day. That seems to me to indicate that she was sick after half a day with those little devils. She had a fever and there was only one thing that could cure it, and it WASN'T more cow bell. Then after she went to the motel with the one guy, he forgot his wallet...
Seems to me to be a simple case of misunderstanding and the policy need to apologize and the school district needs to give her the job back.

In my district, we are not supposed to be seen purchasing alcohol or in bars. Upholding an image that is befitting of your company and profession is a good thing in my book. How would you feel if you saw your child's teacher staggering drunk leaving the bar getting ready to drive themself home at 3:00 a.m?

People can be terminated by many companies for not upholding a proper lifestyle image.

Most of my students' parents would be too drunk to recognize me. :al

In all seriousness, I agree with upholding certain standards of conduct, but if a teacher wants to engage in an entirely legal behavior on their off-duty hours which has no impact on their ability to perform their job duties, they should be able to without fear of repercussions. Drinking alcohol and even being drunk is not against the law. Though, being wasted at 3:00 AM may make it difficult to show up and teach at 7:30 AM. Hangover + Boisterous Students = PAIN.

My personal opinion is that it is irresponsible for a teacher to drink to the point of drunkenness. I personally choose not to drink at all as I see no benefit to it and am prone to having additions (no desire to become an alcoholic). But that is a moral matter, not one of legality.

Just my .02.
